but we can tell you that fema is already on the ground in the u.s. virgin islands and puerto rico. they tweeted out this map here showing what they've been doing. they're providing meals water incident management and three urban search and rescue teams, there are two of those from virginia. issue ban search and rescue teams one and two were activated for both puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands here you can see some photographs of those teams as they are preparing to deploy their expertise. we just don't know how much they're going to have to be doing. the searches, many, many buildings are completely collapsed. let's take you to some of the pictures. at least 24 people were killed when irma swept through the island chain. we know there are shortages of food water and medicine. hospital patients also evacuated from saint thomas and saint john. the u.s. government is sending flights today to my saint martin to evacuate u.s. citizens there. they've been told to expect long lines and no running water at the airport. in the florida keys today as well crews we're told will begin hou

the u.s. virgin islands was hit with a double whammy, irma and then maria. is recovery going any better on the virgin islands than puerto rico. >> i have grave concerns about the recovery that's happening in the u.s. virgin islands at this time. as you said, we were hit first by irma on st. thomas and st. john and then maria on st. cr x croix, both of those category 5 at the time they struck our islands. i've been down there for the last week, visiting with people. being out in the grassroots where everyone is, and i have some real concerns as well. we lost both of our hospitals. we are operating with one emergency room. we have medevaced all of the inpatients off of the islands to the mainland. i have yet to see on the ground discussions about how a real hospital is going to be put in play. there are discussions about an operating room in a box. that's not going suffice for what the people of virgin islands need. there have been distribution centers set up and that's fine for people who live close to those distribution centers or who can drive there but tha

the team is on the u.s. virgin island of st. john right now helping with search and rescue operations there. new this morning.. college park, maryland "will" allow non-citizens to vote in city elections.. even if they're in the country illegally. that's the outcome of a vote last night by the city council. the vote was four-to-three.. and it came after about four hours of intense debate. earlier, the council deadlocked on whether to have a non-binding voter referendum on allowing non-citizens to vote. the mayor cast the tie-breaking vote "against" having a referendum. maryland is suing the trump administration over daca.' the state joined three others in challenging the president's decision to end the program. daca' protects undocumented immigrants brought to the u-s as children from being deported. fifteen other states and d-c filed a similar lawsuit last week. many parents are upset about school bus routes in loudoun county.. and the school board is taking action. the school system has received more than 15-hundred complaints

many thanks. >>> let's talk about the u.s. virgin islands now with paul naball, he is a u.s. citizen who has lived on st. thomas for six years. he joins me on the phone. thank you for being with us. >> good night, rose mary, thank you for having me. >> i want to talk about how bad conditions are on the ground where you are, and how long do you think it will likely take to get things back to normal? >> that is an open-ended question. things have -- you know, we've -- we were struck on wednesday, the 6th, with hurricane irma, and we have been without power or water here on the island now for quite some time. we -- on the ground, things are starting to look a little bit better here. the streets are starting to get cleared. for a while we couldn't even get around all of the island. i had to actually hike into my house the first day after the hurricane to see how it fared. so things are starting to get a little bit better as far as mobility around the island goes. but things are starting to get very scarce around the island as far as our grocery stores and our fuel supplies, basic

virgin islands by stacey plaskett. she is the u.s. virgin islands delegate to the house of representatives. congresswoman plaskett, thank you very much for join iing us this difficult night. i just want to lay out the geography of the area for people. it's -- we're talking about three islands -- st. thomas, st. john and you're on st. croix that we see on the map. that's about 30 miles or 50 miles south of st. john. and st. croix was not hurt badly by the hurricane. that correct? >> that's correct. because irma hit us from the northern part, and we had a direct hit of the hurricane while it was a category 5, it went across st. john and touched the northern part of st. thomas directly before it carried on to the rest of the caribbean. so st. croix, which sits 40 miles south of st. thomas and st. john did not get the same amount of hit from hurricane irma. >> and talk about the two islands that did get hurt. st. john was hit as the hurricane moved, it was hit first. that's the smaller of the two islands. relatively small population. smal

hurricane irma made landfall in the u.s. virgin islands today causing widespread damage. in advance of the storm's arrival of the territory's governor ordered the national guard to prepare for the coming catastrophe by suppressing certain constitutional rights. an executive order issued on tuesday, governor kenneth map and powered the guards seize guns and ammunition from citizens, all to maintain public order after the storm. the order echoes a similar one issued by the mayor of new orleans prior to hurricane katrina. the nra is already threatening legal action over that order. the governor joins us now. governor, before we get to the question of your order, give us a quick update on the conditions of the virgin islands tonight. >> hurricane irma did go through the u.s. virgin islands with the most severe wins and catastrophic wins going through the st. thomas, st. john district, islands. we experienced sustained winds of at least 150 miles an hour with the costs in excess of tha that. we've had damages to our hospital, fighting stations. a good number of homes have lost

virgin islands recover as well. the aftermath of hurricane irma, the u.s. virgin islands. most residents left with nothing. on st. thomas just the frame of a government-built housing project still stands. >> you can see people's living quarters literally just blown and all the remnants. there is your couch. your television. your fans. all the things when you think about all there. >> the majority of the power lines on the island are destroyed. on st. thomas and st. john's officials will still assessing damage without any sense of when power will be back on. >> who got you here? >> one of my partners has a house here. called, said there is a real problem. you read about it in the paper but unless you are on the grounds you don't really understand it. people had worked on hurricane sandy for the city brought them down. >> we lost one of the victims here. took her right out of the building. but folks stayed in here, five, six hours with that wind and survived it. >> and that is island native and 15 time nba all-star tim duncan on the left. bloomburg's team arrived with suppli

unfortunately, it will go through the virgin islands and u.s. virgin islands. worse still, this is likely to become a category 5 storm. just a little more intensification and then it will become a 5. winds now at 150 miles per hour. -- 155 miles per hour. the line between category 4 and 5 is 157. it really won't have any differentiating impact. but it's likely to have 160 mile per hour winds within the next 24 hours and make landfall somewhere on the eastern half of puerto rico as a category 5. likely to be the first major hurricane since george back in 1998. also another big storm was 1989, hugo went through puerto rico. hugo was a big problem in the southeastern u.s. fortunatel i away from the u.s. mainland. but we never want to turn our backs on a named storm, particularly one that big. >>> 71 degrees right now here in washington. temperatures are in the mid-60s out in the shenandoah valley. a little patchy fog from time to time. nowhere near as much of an issue -- plan on clouds and maybe a little fog around this morning. sunshine and in the 830s later and
