most recently, santa rosa and kenwood. that is one of the mandatory evacuations taking place this morning. as you can see right there, from adobe canyon road and calistoga road. this is the area that they have told people to leave immediately, at least when they first came out with that it was around 5:00 this morning and they were telling people to leave. they said take westbound and then go to 101 and go south. they wanted people to go to petaluma, novato, just anywhere to get away from this area. they have evacuation centers set up there for a lot of people to get there. >> this includes so many homes, hundreds of homes, thousands of people potentially affected. it is the area to the north and to the south of highway 12 from kenwood to east santa rosa. for people who can't get out, if you don't have a car, if you don't have any way to get out of town, there is a bus or a set of buses stationed at the safeway at calistoga road and highway 12. but also, we were talking to the sheriff's office of sonoma county. they told u

a look from sky 7 where the situation in kenwood has intensified. you are seeing smokes and the flames in the background there, billowing high into the air. at least hundreds of feet. we will keep an eye on this situation happening right now in kenwood. >> that is the nuns fire, 25% contained. cal fire is more optimistic about containing those fires. officiales from several agencies gave an update from santa rosa. so far today weather conditions are not hampering the fire fight. >> things feel good in our gut as firefighters. so we just need the weather to cooperate with us a little bit. red-flag warnings to stay away and we will, i feel very confident with all of the folks out there that are doing an outstanding job that we will get this thing knocked down f him. >> sonoma county sheriff, also praising pge crews for their speed in damaging electrical lines. that will enable people to return to their homes. >> you can't fight a fire on an empty stomach. geyserville fire protection district showed this picture of firefighters fuelling up with breakfa

santa rosa and kenwood. now, this is an area, the most recent new evacuation that we have this morning. >> yeah. this happened, oh gosh, about two hours ago. the assumption was a lot of people were asleep. this involves hundreds of homes, potentially thousands of people between kenwood and westminister santa rosa. east santa rosa. all along highway 12, south and north of highway 12 from adobe canyon road to calistoga road, people are advised to get out, take highway 12 west and then 101 south and they want people to head as far down south as novato, petaluma. they want people out of the santa rosa area. don't just go one town over. don't go one block over from the evacuation area. get out of town. ne now, this is the second mandatory evacuation that we've had this morning. this is the first one that you're seeing right here. this is the sonoma valley area and this area includes 7th street east from ooeast 87th street to denmark. 8th street east north of denmark road, in this area, not too far from the downto

but this was somebody's house, again, kenwood. as you can see here i guess this was, if we can make it out, the garage obviously because of the cars. but also the washer, the dryer. this was the backyard because you have the barbecue or whatever's left of it. and this is the area -- look at i mean these pots just burned, gone. i guess this is the backyard. this i'm assuming is another home, somebody else's home. i don't think it's their home. but this structure is gone. and right behind me is a swimming pool right here. yeah, that's probably the only thing left. look at this. flippers melted. ugh, gosh. and then over here we have some fires. i'm assuming that this may have been the entrance to the home, but we have some fires burning there. and just everything around here burnt -- the trees. and what is amazing is that you walk around here and you may find two or three homes completely gone, devastated and then just -- if you can pan just for a second to see across the street from this one, that house was fine. we just checked it

as the sun set on the valley, another fire concern, this time a few miles south on highway 12 near kenwood in the sugarloaf ridge state park. the biggest threat, a radio repeater tower that is part of their communication system. >> repeater sites are key for communications. they are trying to stop the fire from damaging the tower. flames shot 200 feet in the air. >> that is what causes us to worry, if the wins pick up, they will throw embers further away. >> reporter: they are trying to keep this arm off the valley for -- floor and away from the fires and kenwood. they are letting it run north across the eastern side of the hills until flames and helicopters can start attacking it from the air at sunrise. >> it steep terrain, that's the only resource we could use until we can get access by road or other means. >> reporter: we are now in the middle of the night crew the, that means hand crews from cal fire as far as ways seattle. bulldozers are cutting lines because those attacks cannot start again until the sun comes up. tonight, one of the best defenses is starting another fire. these are

this section kicked up at 10:00 yesterday morning across sugarloaf ridgeline moving north from kenwood toward santa rosa. firefighters waging attacks throughout the day dropping fire retardant with airplanes and water with helicopters as crews work to reinforce the containment line trying to stop the destruction. >> we have people sitting right on top of these homes. we have a fire truck sitting in the driveway because the last thing we want is to lose more homes.>> reporter: the fire was creating updrafts that kept fueling itself. there are no structures that have been damaged yet and firefighters are trying to keep it away from the city of santa rosa and the oakmont area. the weather has been working in favor of the firefighters. the temperature has been cool overnight and there is no wind so the air quality is terrible. anybody in this area knows that and unfortunately we are getting used to it. i will put on my mask and check in later. anne makovec kpix 5. >>> most of the evacuation advisories from the atlas fire have been lifted including for the city of napa and fairfield. jessic

the cal fire trucks would have to drive an hour away for fuel. >> my uncle's shop up the road here in kenwood, my grandmother us house. these guys, they're it. they're the ones who save us. >> reporter: a new round of trucks headed out this morning to relieve those. who worked all night. even though it is so smoky here this morning, cal fire says it looks worse than it is. >> describe it, we currently have an inversion set throughout the valley to it's very smoky. but once -- as the day progresses, that will lift. and the air will become clearer and we'll be able to get a better visual on exactly where the fire. >> reporter: part of their effort today includes checking in on people who chose not to evacuate. they cleared flammables away from their homes and positioned their trucks to help if needed. >> they have been just wonderful. i can't say enough good things about cal fire. >> reporter: cal fire says it was a good night here in sonoma valley. weather cooperated. the fire laid down. they say things are looking better. they're even planning on lifting the evacuation order in some areas. sp

we're over kenwood and santa rosa right now in sky 7. johnathan, you talked a little bit about that smoke. in your area, what are some of the weather conditions that you're experiencing right now? because, you know, all morning long, our meteorologist has been tracking the winds, and cal fire has said that this is just not the scenario they want to find themselves in this morning. >> yeah, at the scene here, it's a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky, but we are having some westerly winds. and get not good because that's going to push it right towards santa rosa. we're hoping for a change in the weather, it would be nice. >> and again, we're looking live at sky 7 right now. we can see a part of the area down below with those intense flames. the smoke coming up. this is just an incredible view right now. and obviously in parts of the viewing area that have been evacuated, these places have become ghost towns and some of the concern has also shifted to looting in certain areas. from a law enforcement perspective, that's got to be so hard

that includes the east side of sonoma and also the community of kenwood. a retirement community along highway 12 between sonoma and santa rosa. here in the city of sonoma itself, mandatory evacuation orders in place for a number of neighborhoods on the east side of town. this check point we're standing is east napa street and fourth street. anything east of here is shut down as this fire fight continues. this is the area where the n, in,s fire made a pretty good run into the city yesterday. really a pretty dicey situation on saturday morning. fire crews were able to get a hand the on things. they did lose some homes, but they were able to get a handle on things, and the winds have since -- as we talk about, have since calmed down. still the concern is the low humidity up here, it's going be dry, and going to be a warm day, eventually once we get the sun coming up. firefighters not out of the woods just yet >> and there was a big concern trying to keep that fire away from downtown sonoma, the city and the square. do you by any chance know, is the power back

claims could be seen along the ridge line near the community of kenwood. at this edge of the nuns fire has been threatening a number of homes including more along adobe canyon. new sugarloaf ridge state park. the nuns fire has torn through this area once already earlier in the week. that is when so many of the neighbors were forced to evacuate, we are now back at the home and we talked with him a few time ago. >> we lost three outbuildings behind our house. the firefighters were right here and they managed to save the house. thanks to them. my neighbor lost his place, his home is gone. another neighbor on the other side, same thing. in fires they are indiscriminate. it has a mind of its own. i want this place, i want this place, i will leave that one. it's weird how it works. >> reporter: fire crews are stationed by many of the homes along adobe canyon road to protect them if the fire begins to move closer. the nuns fire is 50% contained. it's very active on several different fronts including here in sonoma valley and also on the east side of things in nap

right outside of kenwood in sonoma county. the oaklawn fire is a new fire that started on saturday when the winds kicked up. it is burned 1000 acre. it is 16% contained. the park report said is popular observatory and visitor center are still standing.>>> people in sonoma county returned home when officials lifted evacuation orders for kenwood lynn ellen in the city of sonoma. evacuation orders extended to the city of sonoma with the nuns fire burning homes northeast of downtown. of east seventh street and council road. cal fire says the immediate danger for the city of sonoma has left it. crews continue to make good progress on the nuns fire. for evacuees who spend days away from home it was a mixed bag of emotions. even for those whose homes were spared. >> other folks i know are still in mandatory evacuation areas. they are waiting to see if they can go back in. they know their homes are they are. they might be going back to a charred wasteland.>> some orders and road closures remain in effect tonight. for a complete list g
