mandalay bay hotel. where was that -- where is that in relation to the concert floor. >> the other side. that is to the west behind us if you're looking at the stage from where i was. that's behind us to the west of las vegas boulevard. the whole thing was on the east side. if you're -- so the other side of las vegas boulevard, so it would be to the west and behind us so that would make sense given what we heard the shots would come from behind us across las vegas boulevard. i mean if i had to guess in terms of feet, you know, maybe if you run it maybe like 0.2 mile. >> 0.2 but again so we're not talking 100 to 200 feet. a fair amount of distance. >> yeah, it's definitely more than a couple hundred feet. it would take you, you know, it would take you at least a minute or two to cross las vegas boulevard and get to mandalay it's not like you could walk there in 30 seconds. at least a couple-minute walk. >> i heard from a previous eyewitness who thought the shooting was going on for well over a minute? >>

that was sort of closer to the mandalay bay. and then as we move to the left, that's where all the crowd was. so you can see at least from where we are on the 38th floor, you can pretty much see everything that was going on inside this concert. you can see a lot of people from this viewpoint. now we don't know if the shooter was six floors directly below us, to the left of us, or to the right of us. as i pan off here you'll get a better idea of just sort of where the mandalay bay is. you can see there's a lot more rooms off to the right of where we are and a little bit of some of the rooms to the left. as we look to the left -- >> joe, a few of the witnesses said that as they were facing the stage they felt the shots were coming obviously from behind them but from the right side. does that make sense with what you're seeing? >> reporter: based on what we believe to be the stage, the shots actually came from behind the stage so from where looking at if the fans were facing the stage the shots would have been coming from their rig

i'm on the 48th floor of mandalay bay. i can see the mandalay bay sign to my left. the strip ahead of me. and below of us, is where the concert was. we're on the balcony, taking photos. we thought we were taking fireworks. nobody was noticing because it got loud. and the girl shooting the pictures of me, a video of what happened. she's looking at the concert, saying, i think there's people on the ground. and you have a moment of going, no. and there were people strewn everywhere. and we thought, that can't be real. and the shooter was literally -- i'm not going to -- i can point to where his hotel room was and i thought, we all ran inside. there's been 120 of us still here. we're here all night. sleeping on the floor of the foundation room. but the s.w.a.t. team came in with giant machine guns. and we're thinking, there's a gunman here. i raced behind a potted flower and thought, this is it. it was the good guys. but that was before they got him on the 32nd floor. >> you said you looked down and saw people strewn on the ground and somebody said, people are down ther

we recently went down to the mandalay bay. i can tell that we're days away from completion of the processing of that room. we are getting very close to the completion of the processing of the site. we have a significant amount of time left there, as well. however, the southbound portion of las vegas boulevard is completely open. we are also working diligently as we speak, i believe we just opened up two of the northbound lanes. and the completion of the northbound lanes should occur sometime this evening. so bearing in mind that the investigation is dynamic, ongoing, continuing, and i don't have a lot of answers for you yet, clearing understanding that nobody wants to answer to why more than the police and the victim's families, we have a responsibility to get it right. that's why it takes time. there is at best interesting reporting about how long the shooting lasted and how long it took to us get into the room. first question is how long did the actual shooting last. i'm prepared to give youings in on that. the first call ca

he had to hotel rooms -- two hotel rooms at mandalay bay. he built a plant room -- platform so that he was able to shoot down at these people. when they were able to reach his door about one hour and 12 minutes later after the first shot, he had already shot himself, but had plenty of ammunition left over.>> what has stood out to you that you have seen there?>> reporter: it is amazing to hear the stories of the people who were helping. mothers, teachers, throwing children on the ground and throwing their bodies over them. there is a heartbreaking story of a first responder and attending the concert and giving someone cpr, and then was shot in the back. officers and everyone shouting instructions, scooping up strangers, climbing and doing whatever they could to get out of there. it did not sound like a stampede where everyone was out for themselves, but they wanted to help everyone. there is amazing stories of heroism that is coming out today, and we will be hearing more and more as this goes  farther along.>> what we need to focus on is ju
