>> reporter: john, we are expecting paul manafort. he could be here at the federal courthouse at any time. since, of course, he turned himself in right around 8:00 a.m., we know that processing typically takes about an hour. he will be transported to the district courthouse here by federal authorities. that's when he'll have that arraignment, where he'll be presented with the charges against him. the judge will explain what he's facing and what the maximum criminal penalty is for those charges. of course, as evan mentioned, the indictment has not yet been sealed. it has not been made public just yet. but when paul manafort does appear in court and later rick gates on other charges. those charges will be made public. we will know about them. of course, paul manafort will go before the judge. the judge will explain those charges. and then we also know that there could be -- it's likely that paul manafort, at that point, will plead not guilty. there could also be some sort of discussion about future hearings, as well as any bail that wou

beyond paul manafort. >> that's exactly right. as you see on the screen there, he was the deputy to paul manafort, but he came on with manafort because the two of them had worked so long together so extensively in the private sector. and what was most interesting is that when manafort was fired, rick gates stayed on. if you talk to people -- i remember doing this realtime during the convention and then afterwards, a lot of people at the republican national committee who were working hand in glove with the trump campaign and those in and around the trump campaign, they said rick gates was a very, very important guy. he kept trains running on time. he got things done. very much behind the scenes but really critically important to the trump campaign at that particular time. and while manafort was fired, he stayed on and not just that. he stayed on even in the trump world after the campaign. he was hired by the chair of the inaugural committee to effectively do the same job. get things done during the inauguration. after that, he was

paul manafort turned himself in today. he's accused of funneling millions through shell companies and using that money to buy luxury cars, real estate and expensive suits. rick gates is manafort's former business associate. he also pleaded not guilty. the office of special counsel robert mueller announced the indictment. the former fbi director looking into russian meddling in the election and the trump campaign's possible ties to russia. the criminal charges against gates and man ford do not appear to be directly related to the presidential race. in fact, the indictment does not reference either the campaign or donald trump himself in connection to russia. it does, however, allege that the conspiracy began in 2008 and continued into this year. in other words, the conspiracy is alleged to have continued during the time that he and his associate worked for the campaign and the new white house. the president fired paul manafort in august about reports for his lobbying work for a russian company. but gates continued to work f

the very next month, papadopoulos e-mails paul manafort, then the chairman of the trump campaign about, quote, a request from russia to meet with trump. you may remember then that it's the following month in june 9th when we have the meeting in trump pour between don jr., russian lawyers who we know from another e-mail were offering damaging dirt, damaging information on hillary clinton. look to the next month in july, on the 14th of july, papadopoulos proposes another meeting in august or september between trump campaign members and members of putin's office, the office of the russian president adding it has been approved from our side saying that he had approval from higherups in the campaign. the very next month, campaign supervisory communicates that papadopoulos encourages him, in fact, to go ahead with a promosed meeting. as you look at these and put them in order you're seeing repeated communications here and repeated interests from both sides about communicating about dirt, damaging information on hillary clinton. >> that explains why the special counsel was so interested in al
