sergio quintana is live outside the police department. what do we know? >> we know the two men were taken into custody a few hours ago. the detectives involved have been arriving at the sheriff's station after wrapping up the arrest scene. they arrested two men who may be connected to the death of 46-year-old james figueroa. according to deputies he spotted the men stealing his truck this morning at about 5:30, the person managed to get control of his truck and ran him down in front of his home. he later died of his injury. this evening at 6:00 p.m. a couple sheriff's detectives were doing follow ups and started a vehicle that may have been at the car jacking scene. the driver of the car sped off. detectives chased them. the car crashed in oakland, the two men inside were arrested for the pure suit. but detectives believe they may be connected to the fatal car jacking. figueroa was a father of two children. i talked to a former coworker this evening she describes him as a proud father and very generous to his friends and family. i did manage to talk brief

let's bring in sergio quintana. what's the status there? >> reporter: well we didn't have to go all that far to find this fire. just beyond that police officer there you're going to see there is a sign that says that highway 29 is shut down just north of calistoga, the fire is burning just a couple of miles from here. hot spots along highway 29 continue to burn on mount st. he lay na. several sections along the road are staging areas from fire cruise here from across the state to help. they quickly mobilized to save a nearby home threatened by fire. >> we got in the structure gear and went up and put the fire out. >> reporter: he say it is biggest issue right now is the wind. it doesn't take much to send embers sailing through the air to spark new hot spots. we are just a couple miles north of calistoga on california 29 and there are some portions of the fire where crews aren't even attending to it. calistoga is like a ghost town tonight, downtown is dormant. police are on patrol making sure empty homes are not easy targets for looters. som

nbc bay area sergio quintana in the neighborhood where a memorial is growing. sergio? >> reporter: terry, this is a neighborhood of really nice homes and well-manicured lawns. but right over there is that growing memorial you mentioned. it marks the spot where that man was killed this morning. deputies were first called out for reports of some kind of a disturbance in this neighborhood, then people started calling 911 about gunshots. >> units responded and located a citizen giving cpr to a victim. the units took over the cpr. >> reporter: the 48-year-old man did not survive, he died blocks from his home. his friends say he often walked his dog in this neighborhood and sometimes told people speeding through the streets to slow down. that's what neighbors say may have led to this confrontation. >> he didn't want to start any trouble or anything like that. it's just sad that that happened. because he's a really good friend. >> reporter: eunice silva says her friend leaves behind a wife and two children. this incident has rattled what's otherwise a quiet community. >> very

i'm sergio quintana, "nbc bay area news" >>> two cyclists hospitalized after a hit-and-run driver crashed into them in danville on a road some call dangerous. nbc bay areas roz plater is in danville with details. >> reporter: investigators are still searching for that hit-and-run driver. they do not have a lot to go on except for the vehicle that's is a silver ford escape. a driver who would not even help to help this critically injured cyclist. this accident happened about 2:00 this afternoon on diablo road near clydesdale. when the driver of a silver ford escape struck the group and kept going. two cyclists were critically injured and taken to the hospital. neighbors tell us this is not first time it happened and they know they have to navigate this stretch of road carefully. >> not surprised. it is the second time it has happened this summertime, a car hitting bikes. >> reporter: the part of the road has been the source of controversy for years. some danville residents advocated for widening the highway to include a bike path, another called sos danville sued to put a proposed housing

. >> nbc bay area sergio quintana just arrived. what do you know about who was potentially in the plane and their status? >> reporter: so we -- we just arrived on scene and realized that this plane looks as if it basically overshot the runway. you can see it right there. the nose has plowed into the -- what is actually a road that passes right in front of the runway as it ends here at the sand carlos airport. i talked briefly with a sheriffs department on scene. the deputy says the pilot was safely taken out of the plane. as i walked over there -- i meanky tell you that the plane is basically surrounded -- they put a whole bunch of foam on it to make sure there wasn't any chance of it sparking on fire or anything to that effect. but right now the fire department is out here. the sheriffs department is out there. there is no word on anyone transported just yet. but of course they are still assessing exactly thousand happened, why that plane happened to have overrun the airport. obviously we are trying to get more details and will be
