if you step back and look at alabama, alabama denied medicaid expansion. alabama is the 12th lowest per pupil spending in education. it is one of the poorest states in the union. it rates 47th in income. has the sixth highest child poverty. and most of these are white. nothing roy moore has ever done has sought to deal with those issues. instead, what has he done? he has supported segregation laws. he supported the lies about birtherism. he violated his oath of office. and now, joy, he wants to be given the power to go to the senate so he can block people from having health care. that's not christian. so that he can write laws against muslims, gay people, and work on a tax reform that will hurt the poor and the working poor. this so such a form of heresy that it is troubling. and it's troubling to see themselves who call themselves white evangelicals be engaged in supporting this. >> when reporters will go down and ask people why they support roy moore, they'll generally talk about his christian beliefs. and that is roy moore a little bit more of him tonig

he's there in alabama. martin, there was some supporters there surrounding the candidate as he walked in, but also plenty of protesters outside this library where this event is happening today. >> right. we should point out this was a previously planned event. it is scheduled around veterans day and it was put together by the mid alabama republican club. interesting because, of course, it shows you despite maybe nationally the republican party is trying to distance itself when it comes to the state of alabama and other organizations, they are clearly very tied to this candidate. also should be pointed out that roy moore is, himself, a veteran, so there is a duality to this. it's not just the fact he's been invited and he's a candidate, but it's important, as well. but the protest, that's what is striking. he's there, handshakes and smiles, questions from reporters, but the protests you heard, no moore, and signs held in indication these are likely to dodge him now for some time. even though the candidate ma

perhaps from the alabama republicans. i think the best course would be for her to postpone that and allow him to get out and allow republicans in alabama to remove him, the party not to endorse him. kind of correct the record on this whole incident. >> although we're just learning some breaking news right now. the alabama republican party's governing body has called an emergency meeting at 5:00 p.m. eastern at state party headquarters. we don't know the topic but one can assume pressure is mounting on roy moore. separately, an attorney for the roy moore campaign is also planning to hold a news conference at 5:00 p.m. eastern-at-eastern as well. kristen, do you think that president trump can and should avoid talking about this? >> interestingly, remember, president trump endorsed the other candidate. >> luther strange, yeah. >> he wasn't his choice in the primary so he has the ability to distance himself but i think what is making this challenging is a lot of the reason why roy moore is appealing is the same reason voters

abuse allegations against the alabama senate candidate. let's start there, with me cnn political director david talon. and meg reston and cnn analyst areva martin. here we go -- actually, here we go. there's the moore campaign. >> -- men and women alike. i supervised his staff for the past four years. three years or so. and never heard a single complaint by anybody about inappropriate behavior or uncomfortableness. i just wanted to state that clearly. as anybody who knows judge moore will say that the man is above reproach. and it's why we stand here today. not because he's a man guilty as charged and we're going to stand by our man anyway, it's because we don't believe a word of these lies against him and we know them to be false. we want to clear his good name. over the next months "the washington post" the democratic party have waged a war to destroy roy moore's impeccable reputation. we understand why. their world views could not be more opposite than that of judge moore. the press is quick to preserve the benefits of doubt for bill cl

you see something earlier in alabama, an alabama pastor -- how these girls came up with this, i don't know. they must have had some sweet dreams down the line. plus there are some 14-year-olds who the way they look could pass for 20. the degree to which when learned about what's happening. -- this is -- i mean, this is a kind of corruption of you start down the road of defending donald trump himself. well, all of those women lied about him. then you go another step down the road. it doesn't matter because we want tax cuts. and another step. and all of a sudden you've got a pastor in alabama-- >> i've got a 2-year-old daughter she's 12 years away from being, right, but by that standard, being a target. it's sickening. >> it's the conflation also of this moral authority of using the bible, of using religion, which it has historically been used by roy moore to divide people, to put people down. to now suggest somehow that that is going to be the saving grace for roy moore, i think, you know, again that is not what people of christian faith want to see. >> joseph, let me ask you this, if

it's a statewide election in alabama. on that same day, mitt romney, the republican candidate for president, got 62% of the vote in alabama. absolute landslide. roy moore running statewide same day, same ballot, 51%. he barely got a majority. he barely won that job. that's because of all of the baggage he brought before this. i would say it is very possible in a special election for the u.s. senate. i know a federal office is different than a statewide office like chief justice. i would say it's very possible that doug jones, the democrat, could beat roy moore on the strength of -- if you want to say strength, of these allegations coming out of roy moore now. given all of the baggage he brought before this. it's certainly possible given all the dynamic hess put out there. that moore could survive, but he does not have, i think, as much of a margin for error by far as a republican typically does in alabama. other wild card, you had all those quotes from republican senators. the one that jumpps out at me is luther strange.

alabama will have to vote on december 12th and alabama voters will have to have to decide who to believe and mitch mcconnell has to choose who to believe now and he has to explain his choice, tell us what he does not find believable. about lee corfman's story and tell us what roy moore says when mitch mcconnell asks him, did you do that to that 14-year-old girl? if mitch mcconnell does not ask him, mitch mcconnell is failing to do his duty as a leader of the senate. he's failing to do his duty as a senator who's taken an oath of office. and he is failing to do his duty simply as a human being. if these allegations are true. mitch mcconnell has no right to say that sentence one more time without at least a minimum of cross-examining roy moor on the phone, whatever it takes. and trying to find out the truth himself. joining us now, joyce vance, former u.s. attorney for the northern district of alabama. and a professor of at the university of alabama law school and with us, daniel dale, washington correspondent for the toronto star. and joyce vance, as a former prosecutor, i want you to fir

has the view from alabama changed at all? john archibald joins us now from the great state of alabama. thank you for being here. >> thank you, rachel. >> do you think that the overall trajectory of this case changes now with this fifth accuser? >> i think it's changed a good bit since i talked to you last. i think it was a watershed day. anybody who saw that press conference today and didn't find it compelling didn't watch the same thing i watched and i get that sense that a lot of people felt that way. >> when you say you found it compelling, did you find it to be just materially different and more disturbing than the earlier allegations or just the fact that this woman was willing to put herself out there live on camera and tell everybody in her own words? >> well, you know, she had that -- she was unmistakably gadsden when she spoke and she spoke like someone people here would know and she spoke with a ring of truth. now, i'm saying that. the so-called political leadership here has not said that. they're still holding fast

schumer: i just answered that, the bottom line is it is being run in alabama by alabama. he is raising tremendous money without help from the democratic organization. the amount of money even before the scandal was enormous. he had more than 1000 points of television on the last four weeks. moore has had none. this campaign is sort of like georgia six, we hope it will have a different outcome. as good a job as they did, it was very difficult. they are raising all the money they need. reporter: are there similarities here, scott brown in 2010. is there a comparison? mr. schumer: i don't know, i would compare what is happening around the country. the enthusiasm. we were both -- nancy was minority leader and i was head of dfcc in 2006. you felt the same thing. for instance, western virginia, the ratios did not change, the enthusiasm was not at high level. it was greater in suburban, swing and democratic areas. in 2005, we have lots of candidates and we always got the best in the senate. we always got the best candidate. we have gotten our best choice in every race so far. we

so let's go to the ground, to alabama. cnn's jason carol is live in gadston, alabama. people there have had several days to take this all in -- can you tell, has roy moore lost support over any of this? >> it's tough to tell at this point. >> what i can tell you is after spending all day yesterday with folks at church and throughout the city, whatever people thought about roy moore before this, after these allegations, those people who supported him before, many of them are still strongly standing by him. those folks who were not in support of roy moore and then after the allegations came out, many of those people feel even -- have even stronger feelings against him. the question is are folks starting to move from one box to the other based on these allegations? and with each passing day, that is something that folks here are going have to deal with. one point is clear, though, when speaking to a number of folks out here in alabama, brook is a lot of people will be relying on their faith. this is the bible belt in order to make these decisions and once again, they've a

senate from alabama was 25 years ago. it was richard shelby who then became a republican a couple years later. so it really shows how tough it is. i also think that the other way that jones is playing this is like moore in that he is not -- not signing onto the leadership of his party in congress, meaning moore is saying it's us against them. and jones is saying, well you know what? i'm not so sure if i'll support chuck schumer as my leader. >> it's a brilliant play and something we see red state dems doing. once you're in the senate it, becomes harder to run against schumer because he is your leader and you voted for him. moving forward it's the only way a democrat will win a state like alabama. >> i also think on the republican side, this has become such a personal fight between mitch mcconnell and roy moore and that republicans are recoiling in any way from mitch mcconnell that i think it's -- it behooves it doug jones to stay out of that grudge match and to do his own thing. so i do think it's a very savvy move on his
