according to use male robocall index, 2.5 billion robocalls were made nationwide last month and a substantial number of them were unlawful. so today we establish rules to target these unlawful robocalls by giving voice service providers the ability to bill a robocalls that are highly likely to be illegitimate. will be adoption of today's report and order put in and to unlawful robocalls? sadly, no. doing nothing ensures things will get worse. so the commission has a responsibility to assess whether it can make a difference and even if that difference makes only a band, a small tent at first, it will give notice to scammers that we mean business. i ask my colleagues a series of questions as part of a further notice that could enable this agent being consumers to better assess the effectiveness of our robocall efforts. i did so because i believe consumers have the right to know what kind of job it is doing. we already have valuable data at our disposal. the fcc's consumer complaint data center coupled with obligations on providers and commission issues report on the state of robocalling, i beli

we want too shift gears now and talk about robocalls and a crackdown. today the fcc announced a major step in hanging up on those annoying calls once and for all. our consumer reporter susan hogan is working for you tonight with the 411 on this new ruling. hi, susan. >> hey there, jim. i actually got two robocalls on my cell phone. chances are you probably got a few, too. unwanted calls are the top consumer complaint at the fcc with more than 200,000 received annually. finally some relief. the fcc approved new rules to protect us from unwanted illegal robocalls. how this will work? some companies will now be able to block calls that it detects are fraudulent, like those with area codes that don't is provider, and from numbers allocated to a provider but not currently in use. now, one of the best examples as we all know of an illegal robocall, that annoying irs impersonation scam that has [ inaudible ] millions of dollars from americans and millions of americans as well. back to you. >> thank you, susan. >> thank you, susan. all right, we have had a love

concerted pushback by roy and his wife kayla moore, posting on facebook a fake robocall. what is the reception from folks down there as you're trying to report this out? >> like with every story, people are anxious to talk and people who are not anxious to talk to you. we're trying to stay focused on reporting the story, not so much on the reaction and, you know, backlash so to speak. >> one thing that's striking is how memorable all of this was to the individuals that you've interviewed. >> well, you know, they've seen roy moore over the years, rise in prominence. and all we've spoken to, they've thought about this fact this guy asked me out when i was in high school. in some cases, kind of laughed about it. in the case of the woman who was 14 when roy moore took her back to her house, she was haunted by this. and you know, wasn't until he ran for the senate and, you know, we reached out to these women and through a series of interviews they finally decided go on the record. or in the most recent story, they were inspired by the women who went public earlier to speak. so
