i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook, thank you for joining us this morning. >> this morning, federal safety investigators are searching for the cause of the deadly train derailment in washington state. >> three people of the 85 people died and many others are injured. caroline shively joins us and it sounds like speed is the factor they are focusing in on. >> reporter: that's what they are looking most at this morning. they got the data recorder from the back of the train. they haven't been able to get to the second one. what they learned is that at the point of impact, the train was doing 80 miles per hour around a curve. the speed limit there is 30 miles per hour. more than double what they should have been doing. another thing that might have been a factor. there's no positive train control. that would have slowed the train down. if you're going into a curve too quickly, if you're something that you need to slow down for, that would have. had that mechanism been put in place. it would have slowed the train down. that was not installed on this train. plenty of questions. >

>> i'm dave clark. >>> christian captain you're there right now. this involved a fedex and a car, what happened now. >> reporter: at least an hour before 880 opened, lets get a sense of what is going on at this hour. that investigation is still very much under way with a coroner here, he arrived on scene 40 minutes ago. we do see some movement up there, that big rig truck, one of the trailers of that big rig truck is still on its sign. they're still trying to peace together what happened here this morning. chp has told us the collision happened at 10 until 3 this morning, the fedex and big rig and the car were all southbound on 880, and the investigators say they arrived here on scene here, the time they arrived, paramedics are trying to work on and revive the argument of the car, they said that the person in that car that had this accident with the fedex truck is the person who died. the fedex driver is still on scene here and has reportedly been cooperating with the investigation. they've closed down all four lanes, southbound 880 at 66 so they c

i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. it's 5:30 and we continue to follow the fires in southern california. many fires are burning and they increase in size overnight. >> a lot. >>> and the ones further south, they're moving a lot. >> many are people talking about the thomas fire but ventura fire is not the only fire for firefighters, this fire in los angeles county is only 5% contained. that is burning near the gety center which has closed its center and it is working to replace priceless works of art. 700 homes have been damaged, people in 700 homes and apartment buildings, and schools are all evacuated as well. and 20 square miles have burned in the creek fire in the northern san fernando valley and 150,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. 4 people destroyed and 2500 people with homes and businesses have been threatened. two firefighters have been treated with injuries. the rye fire, it's one that's burned in the amusement park. that fire 10% contained. firefighters saying they may not be able to contain that fire

i'm dave clark. pam cook is here. steve is off today. and we have rosemary back with a look at the forecast. >> good morning to you, dave. >> the winds are coming down in the area. that's great news. a little bit breezy but not as bad as yesterday. here's a look at the golden gate bridge where cph has not posted any advisories for bridges. and the national weather service has allowed the wind advisory for the hills to expire early as well. the next few days, temperatures continue to climb and i'll talk about that in just a moment. and in socal, the big story is the fire that is burning in ventura in the santa paula area. the red flag warning is widespread and it's going for a few days. it expires midnight friday. and the winds are gusting to 60 miles per hour. and isolated areas to 80 miles per hour where the fire is burning at this time. it's in ventura county. we're looking at improving conditions. generally light and there's still a breeze. oakland reporting 12. napa, novato, fairfield, reporting eight. the winds will be with us but i

i'm gasia mikaelian in early for pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. it's cold this morning. the national weather service issued a freeze warning. and steve has been talking about it too. temperatures throughout the bay area are near freezing or even below. >> leigh martinez in walnut creek. and it's really the inland areas that are likely to experience the freeze. >> reporter: it's clear, dry, and cold. we are in walnut creek. we're showing 32 degrees in walnut creek. we drove around to some of the car dealerships and saw what looked like might have been frost. we chose this park here. we don't see anything here but at the traffic lights, we were trying to find out if it's ice or not. we did come over this way because the bank has a sign up there. it's been stuck on the time and we don't know if it's frozen. hopefully, all of the pets were brought inside last night. and if you had any outdoor plans, hopefully, you found a way to protect them. any exposed pipe was in danger of freezing. unfortunately, you can't stay warm by burning wood in a fireplace

i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. and we are monitoring the events out of washington state after the amtrak train jumped the tracks. >> federal safety investigators are still searching for the cause of the train derailment south of seattle. and they've already said speed may be a factor. >> at least three of the 85 on board the train died. and many others are injured. caroline shively is live in dupont, washington, near the crash scene with an update on what investigators are looking for today. caroline-- >> reporter: hi there dave and pam. you said it. speed is the main factor they are looking at. 80miles per hour is what the data recorder is telling them. the train was doing 80 miles per hour around a steep curve where the speed limit was only 30 miles per hour. the ntsb tells me that's just a snapshot. they don't know if the train was accelerating or decelerating. they'll be going over the data recorder and looking for the second black box at the front of the train. and they'll always be interviewing the crew membe

i'm dave clark. >> i'm gasia mikaelian. we get back to breaking news we have been following throughout the morning. san francisco mayor ed lee died overnight. >> mayor lee was 65 years old. he died at 1:11 am at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. former mayor willie brown told us this morning that mayor lee had a heart attack. ed lee became san francisco's 43rd mayor and the first asian- american mayor in san francisco when he was appointed in 2011 when gavin newsom resigned to become lieutenant governor. mayor lee then won an election in november 2011 and was reelect did in 2015. >> the office received a statement -- is profound sadness and grief that we confirm that mayor edwin m. lee passed away on tuesday, december 12 at 1:11 am at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. family, friends and colleagues were at his side. our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, and need to, his two daughters, brianna and tania, and his family. the mayor was taken to the hospital last night and died a short time later.>> chri
