vaughn hillyard. voting beginning in a few hours from now. you've spoken to hundreds of people during the course of your time down there. including undecided republican voters. how is this going to play out for them. what have they told you? >> reporter: good morning. two hours away now from the polls opening up here locally in alabama. when you talk to the republican voters, this is over the last month since november 9 is when the initial allegations came forward out of "the washington post" article. we've talked to as you mentioned countless republicans who were either hesitant to vote at all, hesitant to vote for roy moore, or hesitant to vote for democratic for many of them the first time in their lives. without the campaign at this point, looking at this rather open last night. they think of course they were very confident at this point. they think they have an eight and a half point advantage in this race. they told me it comes down to they're not concerned about republicans crossing over in lar

nbc's vaughn hillyard is in montgomery, alabama. so yesterday we see the first stumping of the president for roy moore, and pensacola, florida. today more news, the robocall. what do you know about it? >> a robocall from the president of the united states. this thing is significant because roy moore hasn't had significant republican backing in this campaign. if you look at attorney general jeff sessions, he hasn't even backed roy moore, saying he has no reason to doubt the women's stories. richard shelby said he wrote in another republican's name. ivanka trump said two weeks ago there should be a special place in hell for individuals who prey on children. [ inaudible ] -- the fact that donald trump is now coming out is significant. we are here in montgomery with doug jones. we were with him in selma as well. >> i can't remember what day we're in now where roy moore is in hiding. he comes out only to be seen, kind of like the ground hog to see whether or not he can see his shadow. we're out here and we're talking. that's that effort

vaughn hillyard is our man who has covered the moore campaign throughout. hey, vaughn. >> reporter: hi, brian. let's set it up this way, if i could. i've been here now on the ground since that "washington post" story came out on november 9th. it's been more than a month we've been on the ground with the moore campaign and the doug jones campaign. the contrast between these two campaigns couldn't be more clear. roy moore, out of the last seven days, he was missing for six of those, brian. he was nowhere to be seen on the campaign trail until last night when he appeared with steve bannon. there was a ten-day stretch in which he didn't appear on the campaign trail. over the last month, brian, he never visited mobile county. he never visited shelby county. he avoided the press at every single turn along the way. i talked to a campaign official last night, i said, why has your candidate not been out here meeting voters, answering questions? he compared it to a football game, running out the clock. he said at this point they felt comfortable with where they were

. >> moore has denied all the allegations, let's go to nbc's vaughn hillyard who has been in alabama the whole time. vaughn, i want to go back to this whole idea of the rnc pulling its support initially. i think it had about 11 people on the kbround working for roy moore. now they are going back in. this is not the senate committee. this is rnc. what does this mean in terms of actual help for roy moore? >> ali, we are state awaiting word from the rnc exactly what they are planning to do. we are just seven days out. they had three weeks off here. they had 11 operatives on the ground who were collecting data, really trying to identify which voters they needed to target of the suddenly without three weeks of data it is a tough to come in at the last moment. in terms of field operation there has been no word about them i guess recommitting boots on the ground. as for tv ad buys, radio ad byes, bijate byes, i did just confirm with a protrump super pac they will be going on the air waves. they have a $1.1 million ad buy here. they are not backing roy moore. we should point out they will be

vaughn hillyard is in birmingham, alabama with a welcome to you vaughn. this tight race is certainly in the home stretch, just a couple days to go. what are you hearing from the voters on the ground there? >> reporter: there is only one campaign on the ground at this point and that is doug jones. he stopped in selma, montgomery and birmingham where he had a get out the vote concert with the band st. paul and the broken bones. today this will be his third church here this morning in the birmingham area right behind us, he will be then making his way to multiple get out the vote campaign canvases. roy moore hasn't been seen since tuesday. and it is quite something. you know, usually the weekend before the tuesday election, you see both candidates out. you know, knocking on door, trying to rally their volunteers. but roy moore, there is nowhere to be seen. he is not expected to be seen until tomorrow night monday when he is joined by steve bannon. but when you are looking purely effort on the ground, it is hard not to discount the effort being put into play

i want to head to alabama, midland city wher, where we fin vaughn hillyard. what is happening on the doug jones thing? >> reporter: on the doug jones side, they have a barack obama robocall at their call. there have been no calls that they have dispersed them, but right before the commercial break, a new poll out from fox news is showing the democrat, doug jones, ahead by ten points. but i should also when we say that, pair that with a college poll that also came out this morning showing roy moore up by nine points. it is something we have been saying for weeks, right? we are not getting much -- there's a big disparity when talking to voters that are on the ground to determine where the race is going over the final 24 hours. it is a big question mark. it can go from 15 points to jones to 15 points for moore. you talk to enough hesitant republicans on the ground that were not sure whether to vote at all, or whether they would be willing to vote for doug jones, which the democrat is going to need a significant portion of the republican electorate to cross over
