we are starting with a serious crash in milpitas. a wrong-way driver caused a crash on southbound 880. >> traffic is very slow in the area and is expected to stay that way. alex savidge is on the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: a huge investigation unfolding in the southbound lanes of interstate 880, north of 237 in milpitas. according to the chp, the driver of this green minivan, on the left-hand side of your screen against the divider, the driver of that band got on the freeway early this morning going in the wrong direction, traveling north on southbound interstate going in the wrong direction, traveling north on southbound interstate 880. that van then slammed into four other cars. the driver of that van, according to the chp, suffered major injuries in that crash and has been transported to the hospital. amazingly enough, according to officers on the scene, the people inside those four other cars, only one person suffered minor injuries which is incredible. i want to bring in officer janine reynolds with the chp. she's

a huge pileup on 880 in milpitas early this morning. the chp says this dark green minivan was heading north in the southbound lanes of the freeway when it slammed head-on into four other cars. >> speaking to us in spanish, claudia maldonado said she saw headlights coming out her and swerved her car trying to get out of the way. the minivan crashed into the back of her buick before striking three other cars. the driver of the minivan suffered major injuries and died later at the hospital. >> reporter: authorities say he was a 52-year-old man from oakland. no one else involved in this wrong-way crash was seriously hurt. >> obviously any loss of life and injury is tragic but given the terrible road conditions we had last night and poor visibility, this could be a lot worse. any loss of life is horrible. >> reporter: this crash happened just before 5 am on southbound 880, just north of highway 237. the chp got a pair of 911 calls reporting this van driving in the wrong direction. initially officers had to shut down the three left lanes of t

. >> live outside milpitas, bob redell, what's the holdup here? >> reporter: good morning. the federal government is helping fund part of this project given them an extra three months to come up with the design for the under ground portion of this project. whether to build a single or a double tunnel. the bta is scheduled to approve one of these designs in april. the bart board director will receive the latest look of the extension. this is known as phase two. you see on the map here, it will extend six miles into the south bay with four new stations, that'll include alum rock and santa clara and downtown san jose. the three-month design process is not a lot of times. they're saying it will be opened by 2026. phase one is near completion including warm springs and milpitas and berryessa were supposed to be opened last month which would have been ahead of schedule but they are opening at june. the milpitas bart station here at capital and great mall, looks like it is almost complete. the next step is handing over to bart so that agency can begin its testing. bob redell. >>>

it happened in the southbound lanes of 880 in this area right as you approach highway 237 in milpitas. the crash has been cleared out of the way. you do have slow traffic this morning in the area. this is what the scene looked like before 5:00, when the driver of a dark green minivan was spotted going northbound in the southbound lanes of 880. there were a couple of 911 calls that came in. and shortly after that, this minute evan slammed into four other cars. the man driving that van suffered critical injuries and ultimately died at the hospital early this morning. the chp says he was a 52-year- old man from oakland. now, one person in one of those other cars was treated for minor injuries. but that's it. everyone else walked away from this crash. a chp officer here at the scene says it is truly amazing more people weren't seriously hurt. >> obviously any loss of life and injury is tragic. but given the terrible road conditions that we had last night and poor visibility, it definitely could be a lot worse. but, you know, any loss of life is horrible. is horrible. >> reporter: and so n

there still some holding on toward san jose and milpitas but a lot of this has moved into the east san jose footholds and the santa clara valley. a little left in the santa cruz mountains but we are about done. southern california is not. they are now starting to get the rain. san diego has had good rain. because of the rain and santa barbara for the burned areas, they have a flash flood warning that will go until 5:30. there will be some moderate to heavy rain there. 40s and 50s for the temperatures but the cool air will work its way and. 50s for most. cloverdale, 52. i expect some of these to the north to go down a little bit. look at the breeze. it never materialized yesterday. it was almost all rain in the sierra. a beneficial system for us. we will take the rain but they could use the snow. the system is pushing out of the area and we will be on the dry side. there will be another system clipping us on thursday. more to the north. most of the rain will be out of the picture after a really impressive system. it looks good going into the weekend. there are signs next week we make it

look at the south bay right now, rain has been skipping around san jose but then you head up toward milpitas and we are seeing that rain there also in fremont. as we go up the peninsula north of palo alto you are starting to see the showers rolling through san mateo and also for san francisco, across the bay over toward oakland as well as the tri-valley where we're seeing that rain coming down in spots. it's been pretty scattered and as we go through the day we will get some clearing, temperatures reaching into the mid 50s for the north bay, upper 50s for the south bay and the inland areas, up to 60 degrees in san francisco. as we look at what's going to happen at 8:00 and our rainfall totals that we should see at that time, looks like we should have about a quarter of an inch of rain in san francisco, higher in oakland. as we get a look at our rain totals in san jose only a few hundreds of an inch, by 1:00 it's all out of here as we go through the rest of the day. our skies will be clearing. as you're getting dressed this morning if you are part of this early crowd you will need the umbrell
