live on the stanford campus, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >>> concerns of rising inflation have caused jitters on wall street and yesterday the government released a report that added fuel to the fire. cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger is here to explain what you need to know. so jill, what did the report reveal? >> reporter: consumer prices increased 2.1% in january from a year ago. now, that matches the december peso it was a bit higher than expected. prices of gas, shelter, apparel, medical care and food contributed to the higher rate. now, core prices, those are the ones that exclude food and energy, rose 1.8% over the past year. but here's what economists are pointing out. those core prices have been accelerating by nearly 3% over the past three months. with the underlying price precious picking up the fed might raise interest rates faster than the currently anticipated 3 one quarter point hikes this year. >> so jill, knowing that how should we prepare for a possible higher inflation? >> reporter: lock in fixed rate mortgages. if we get higher inflation, we get higher rates. you
