you've been talking to folks, betsy, on the hill about him. what are people on both sides of the aisle saying about watching this play out? >> one of the most interesting observations i heard today actually came from a former senior justice official. what that person told me was that when nunes was first named chairman of the intelligence committee, back in the previous era before this whole russia situation really started taking off, among folks who were in the national security law space and intelligence space, there were some immediate concerns. and part of the reason for those concerns was that nunes wasn't viewed as somebody who was a serious heavy hitter on intelligence matters. and what that would mean is that nunes was very much going to be guided and heavily influenced by the staff he chose. he wouldn't necessarily be in a position on individual level to make sense of some of the material he was faced with. the second thing that this person i spoke with said generated a lot of concern was that nunes was viewed by somebody who was poli

i'll start with you, betsy, you came out with a great piece on how officials at the i.c.e. and the reporting that you found is that they want to move into intelligence. >> exactly. what people familiar with these conversations, including a current i.c.e. official told me is that the i.c.e. or agency is looking to become a member of the powerful intelligence community. now i.c.e. has two components. one component is responsible for arresting and detaining and undocumented immigrants. the secondhands transnational crime and counter proliferation but the second would have a position in the intelligence community. but both components of i.c.e. do raids together. they do operations together i should say. and so many civil liberties advocates are concerned if i.c.e. has a footprint in the intelligence community, that some of that intelligence could be used for immigration enforcement purposes. >> how might this fit in based on betsy's reporting? why would it make sense for i.c.e. to gain intelligence capability orz be part of the intelligence community. >> well the fact of the ma

and betsy woodruff, a politics reporter for daily beast and an msnbc contributor. peter, you were in the team that reported what john kelly had to say about this on monday where he said -- that's where he has issued the famous quote, "it was all done right." that's what john kelly said in your reporting. in "the journal's" encounter with john kelly to even get that much out of him, what kind of confidence did he show in the way he dealt with this one when he was asked about it? >> well, it was brief interview that my colleague did. he was pretty clear he didn't think there was any fault on the white house's part. what is strange about that is it's at odds with what deputy press secretary ross shaw has said. ross shaw told reporters last week the white house did make mistake. they could have done things better in this instance. so kelly's sunny verdict on how the white house handled it is really at odds with the white house's own messaging. >> and betsy woodruff, what did the white house know? when did it know? it has all become more crucial, especially in march. wh

trump: thank you, betsy >> mr. president come iambic commissioner of education in the great state of florida. -- ita terrible that it was a turbo tragedy. to hear from parents -- it was a terrible tragedy. governor of florida, rick scott, as you know was in parkland, and he spent a great deal of time there. he also asked that we convene roundtables which we did on safety. one on school safety, one on mental health and one on 10 safety. , thescussed mental health policies and practices that need to be in place. we discussed all of these things and some of the issues brought up came up when we talked. secretary devos just mentioned one of them, which is one of the tier one social and emotional issues, up raptors where we are helping students feel connected, so that we do not reach the needing mental health services to intervene with individuals like about. practices being in place, we have -- we are required to have a fire drill ends will once a month. we are not required to have active shooter drills. that, --actice
