. >> chief white house correspondent john roberts is live from the north lawn with the latest. >> good morning. the president in about five minutes' time the pool is gathering right now will be hosting his second listening event on school shootings and other mass shootings. this one unlike yesterday's session will not be carried live. this will be what's called a tape play back. the president meeting with a number of state and local officials including the attorney general of florida, pam bondi, who is a familiar figure here around the white house. curtis hill, the indiana attorney general as well as christine, the mayor of parkland, florida, behavioral health specialists and other law enforcement. the president will be hearing suggestions on how to deal with these issues from the state and local folks. yesterday was mostly about personal stories and what happened in marjory stoneman douglas high school. six students from the high school there and parents, and then a parent who lost his daughter in that shooting last week. let's listen to some of what they had to say yesterday. >> noth

. >> dana: john roberts is live on the north lawn. john? >> reporter: dana, good afternoon. the president spoke with the nation's governors for about an hour today about how to prevent future school and other mass shootings. he listened to a number of ideas that the governors had. he also had a few ideas of his own. president saying today if congress does not take steps to ban so called bump stock, that the device that attaches to a standard semiautomatic weapon, the president said he'll do it himself by placing them under the same laws governing machine gun. the president also talked about the need to harden schools on which he got support from several governors. the president with a harsh assessment of the response of the broward county sheriff's deputy saying, if he was there, he would have reacted quite differently. let's listen. >> i got to watch some deputy sheriffs performing this weekend. they weren't exactly medal of honor winners. all right. the way they performed was, frankly, disgusting. you know, you don't know until you're tested, but i really believe i'd run i

. >> jon: chief white house correspondent john roberts joins you now with more. >> good afternoon. today is one of two listening sessions the president will hold today and tomorrow. the first one 4:15 he will huddle with students, teachers, parents who have had some sort of connection to gun violence. among the people in attendance this afternoon we're told some 15 to 20 students from marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida. the scene of last week's shooting. sandy hook promise, parents of children killed in the sandy hook elementary school district and students and parents from the local d.c. area who have had experience with school violence. tomorrow the session will be with state and local officials to talk about law enforcement and the mental health aspects of this issue. yesterday as you mentioned at the top the president took action following the las vegas massacre of october 1 where 58 people were killed in a hail of gunfire. the president directing attorney general jeff sessions to look into whether so-called bump stocks could be banned. they allow a semi

john roberts has more. >> good morning. we'll get to that in a second. first some breaking news here from the trump administration and the trump campaign. we have known for months now the president plans to run for reelection in 2020. now we're getting news as to who will lead that campaign. the trump campaign announcing a short time ago that brad parscal. the digital media guru has been named as the campaign manager. he worked for the trump organization and got into politics and well liked at the white house. the president thinks he is brilliant. in addition to his 2020 duties he will be heavily involved in the 2018 mid-term campaign. so again get used to him. easy to pick out of a crowd. a big long beard, 6'8". he will be leading the 2020 trump campaign. the president meeting this hour with republican senators. the meeting about renewable fuel standards but no question gun safety will also come up. the president talked at length about that yesterday with the nation's governors. again promoting his idea of arming and training certain members -- certain

>> i think that john roberts hit it on the head before me. the fact that the democrats are eager to have the president have to make some redactions here so they can claim there is a political motivation behind these. the fact of the matter is if we look at the republican memo we heard so much about sources and methods, etc., etc., there was absolutely no national security implications to a fully unredacted version of the memo. so there is quite a bit of political theater that goes into this and we also have to understand this memo was constructed as a rebuttal to that of the republicans. it was constructed specifically as a political document in order to have a rebuttal version to give context. but it is also interesting here that much of the context goes into the minutia of particular footnotes on whether the fisa application did disclose it was a political document or the f.b.i. disclosed that. >> jon: that one of the big questions here. the republican memo says the fisa judge or judges was not told that the dossier was politically motivate

john roberts is joining us at the white house. john, much was made and most of the questions focused on who knew what and went about rob porter who sense left the white house. how big of an issue will this be and how much for the white house it will be? what do you think? >> i think it's going to be a fairly large issue. we're running up against a budget briefing that the omb director mick mulvaney is giving. if he walks out, i have to jet out of here. here's the problem for the white house. what did they know and when did they know it? that's going back to nixon, the same problem. the fbi was told by colby holderness, rob porter's first wife, on january 25 of last year. more than a year ago. all of the allegations that she levelled against him and they were shown and they were given the photographs of her with the black eye. so the fbi knew about it more than a year ago. the white house only learned about it last wednesday. there would be appear to be a disconnect. under usual circumstances, somebody from the fbi would have come

john roberts is live on the north lawn. john? >> we watched the entire meeting that the president had with state and local officials, attorney generals from indiana and florida, the mayor of parkland is there as well. the president being forceful on this idea that schools are soft targets that the idea of gun-free zones is, as the president put it, nonsense and that things need to change and he believes and he said this repeatedly, probably spent 15 minutes or more in total on this issue. the way to address it, as you said, ensure that certain qualified individuals are on the school staff. they could be teachers, could be administrative staff. he said yesterday could be janitors, licensed to carry a concealed weapon and train how to use it in an aggressive situation where you'd have to be defending against a shooter. listen to what the president said. >> i think a concealed permit for having teachers and letting people know that there are people in the building with a gun, you won't have -- in my opinion, you won't have the shoot

john roberts at the white house with more on this. something that also came up when the australian prime minister came to visit. >> let's give you an update on the vehicle that struck the barricade. it was at the southwest corner of the white house complex. down 17th street from pennsylvania towards constitution. the south end of the eisenhower executive office building. i'm told the woman hit the barricade intentionally. she's described as being from out of state. i can't quite read the license plate and the state. looks like it might be connecticut or something like that. i'm told she's not from virginia, she's not from maryland or the district of columbia. we're told by law enforcement this had nothing to do with the. and this was not an attack against the white house. we don't know exactly the reason that she hit the barricade. but again we're told she suffers from mental problems. we don't know how that was manifest in her driving her car right into that barricade there. we're told that no law enforcement or secret service, unifo
