i want to just point out that ever since sandy hook, when we first started trying to figure out what congress could do to help prevent gun violence, the top priority was passing legislation to expand background checks. as the leader said, it's a bipartisan bill. i think in the last congress we had 192, 195, something, co-authors. democrats and republicans. this year, again, in this congress again it's bipartisan. sadly the number of republicans on the bill have dropped. there's only three. because there were some retirements. there's some interest expressed by others to come on. but for the last five years, this has been the number one issue. the number one issue. today the number one issue is create a select committee on gun violence. which i think is important. but it's important to note, for all of you, that i introduced this bill out of utter frustration that the republican leadership wouldn't give us a hearing on the expanded background check bill. every time we went to them they said they had some excuse, some congress maimy excuse, to be specific. so out of frustration, i said

sandy's daughter, jessica youy, died in the aurora movie theater killing. sandy, i appreciate you being on, i'm sorry it's under these circumstances, as it is every time i talk to you. just, we know now there are a number of families who are waiting for final word on the fate of their children, of their loved ones. i just cannot imagine eight hours into this, that that weight and the weight that they have ahead of them in the hours ahead. >> it's terrible. there were some parents in the aurora shooting that waited 18 hours. at sandy hook, of course, we know how they were waiting in a gym and waiting and waiting and waiting until the governor said, if you don't have your children by now, then they're not coming home to you. i got a phone call right before i got miked up here from another advocate whose friends have just been notified in florida that their 15-year-old daughter was killed. so their wait is over, but their hell has just begun. >> and i know part of what you do is to try to be there, particularly as soon as possible, to kind of help people, as m
