i would call it mansfield senate. mike mansfield set the tone that senate. the longest-serving majority leader. he built a senate in my view, that was premised on trust, mutual respect, good-faith engagement and i would say, bipartisanship. it was a healthy place. anna found that to be the case while i was working for senators in the majority in the 70s. and then it carried over into the 80s even though we lost majority control of the senate. so i loved what i was doing. and i think everyone there loved what they were doing. it was a great place. it is no accident that people that we know now but not necessarily then were running around like madeleine albright or stephen breyer or lamar alexander and susan collins. i cannot even begin to fathom what it would be like now. all of these bright people who want to work in the senate come to the senate. they are very busy. they are still always very busy. they do good work. sometimes they produce things in committee. and then, the leaders for the leader says we are not doing that. it's not part of the partisan age
