marjory stoneman douglas high school remains closed off for a scored day. a nearby school is open for children to. a massive vigil was held overnight for wednesday's high school massacre. at one more point the crowd chanted in unison, no more guns. >> this makes no sense. this is impossible. my girl, my 14-year-old baby. >> reporter: earlier in the day the suspect, 19-year-old nikolas cruz was brought handcuffed into kourts. >> you're charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. >> reporter: cruz was held without bond. the broward county sheriff's office says he confessed to the shooting. he had mounting problems and broke through the cracks. >> he is a broken human being. he's on suicide watch. the child is deeply troubled and he's endure sigd can't trauma on the loss of his mother. >> reporter: there are signs the loss of life as bad as it was could have been worse. a state senator said authorities told him it appears cruz tried to fire out of the third story windows as the students were fleeing. thankfully the windows made of safety glass did not shatt

here is what a student at stoneman douglas high school told me earlier. >> i don't think president trump has actually spoken to a teacher about this. because every teacher i've spoken to thinks it's just a horrible idea. so many things can go wrong. first off, my mom is a teacher at the middle school next to us, and all teachers are humans and have their bad days and i know for a fact that my mom doesn't want a gun lying around with her. when the s.w.a.t. team comes into the school, who are they looking for? they're looking for someone with a gun. >> democratic congresswoman debbie dingel dealt with the trauma of young violence at a young age. >> i never really talked about what happened to me as a child until the last couple of years. and, you know, when i'm talking to these kids, i'm someone who had to hide in a closet, afraid that she could die because of a gun. so i know where they're coming from. if someone has been convicted of domestic violence or stalking, and it's a dating partner or something, they shouldn't be able to have access to gun. if they've been convicted of a felony,
