aaron david miller, it's almost like it's a tale of two responses. response number one, trump threatening iran with war after rhetoric, and then response number two, trump invites vladimir putin to the white house after russia attacks the united states. how do you square the two? >> i mean, i'd square it by -- with the following observation. this is the first president probably in the history of the republic who lacks the capacity to define an american national interest on whatever the subject is, iran, the eu, china, or russia. somehow untethered from his own personal fears? his political interests? his likes and his dislikes. all of these things have -- i think something in common. and what you see in the tweets is that frustration, is that resentment. i think that's what explains and that's the connective tissue on all of this. one of my former bosses george schultz once said when you dwoent have a policy, the temptation grows to give speech. or in this case to tweet. we don't have a strategy toward north korea. we do not have a strategy toward ru

she's joining us are from new york and aaron david miller and adviser on the middle east. he is joining us from washington. welcome both of you to the program. before i get to the middle east development, i want to just talk about fast and furious movements from the white house trying to clear up and clarify what was said in that press conference. so let me read you this. in the last few minutes, the white house has said that it opposes any proposal for russians to question americans. now saying that president trump opposes president putin's proposal to question ambassadors or the human rights activists. what do you both make of this whiplash that we have been seeing almost minute by minute since the monday helsinki press conference? aaron. >> i think it's cleanup time. i mean, through five administrations, i've never, ever seen anything quite like this. proposal by vladimir puti that actually would involve the united states agreeing to allow russian intelligence, law enforcement to interrogate -- but to interrogate a former u.s. ambassador. senior american officials scram

so aaron david miller is with me. cnn global affairs analyst. welcome back, sir. you know, out of the debate here, it appears the north koreans have not made any real moves to start this disarmament process. and i was reading something you wrote that it's time for the trump administration to learn to live with the nuclear north korea. why? >> well, i don't think we have to love the north korean bomb, brooke, but we'll have to get used to the reality we have to live with it. because even under the most ideal circumstance, kim jong-un is not going down to zero warheads. and any sense on the part of the administration that is xre comprehensible will see this won't happen over time. they have to cap and restrain some of the more egregious capacity. but the idea again of figuring that kim is going to give up his nukes ain't going to happen. one last point. >> yeah. >> we got to not lose sight of the goal. the goal is to reduce the prospects of war on the korean peninsula between south korea and north korea and reduce the prospects of war between the united states and n

"washington post" is reporting that a senior white house official says coats has gone rogue. is that your sense of things? is coats being caught off guard in one case and in another reacting to the president being wrong on the intelligence assessment? >> there's palpable frustration within the white house of dan coats' interview, how he was critical of the president for meeting with putin once, for doing it again. he showed his cards on stage that he had no idea the president was inviting vladimir putin back to the white house this fall. i don't think dan coats is the most popular person in the white house today. his frustrations seemed to express the ad hoc meeting. a lot of white house officials don't know what was said in the meeting, trying to unspool what it means. you have a disconnect between the president and his administration. now that dan coats, as a
