nbc's bay area bob redell joins us live at the san jose dmv. we have all waited in the lines before, bob. >> reporter: yes. and there were long lines this morning. good morning to you, laura. anyone going to the dmv, one thing you dread outside of the paper work is the long lines. that's why the dmv in san jose and another are opening hours earlier to help people get through the offices faster so the two offices we are speaking of are the san jose driver's license processing center here on center road and the oakland-claremont. 7:00 a.m. four days a week except for wednesday opening at 9:00 a.m. on top of the two offices opening earlier, 14 bay area dmv offices with saturday service 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., beginning on august 4th. as far as the workforce goes, dmv plans to hire 400 new employees, statewide to handle the long lines. with the agency already hiring

what does the dmv think about this? >> reporter: the dmv is actually investigating this company and whether it is legal for them to do this. it was really painful here at the santa clara office. we talked to people who waited more than five hours. a lot of them told me they would pay for an independent service that could get them an appointment within two weeks. but they question why they can't do it themselves on the dmv website. major frustration at this dmv office in santa clara today for people waiting in lines out the door. >> it took me about four hours just to right now which is waiting for my number to get called. >> reporter: dmv blames the delays on the it's taking staff to issue the new federal ids which will soon be required to fly. >> tried to make an appointment a few weeks ago. the closest available time was like mid august. i'd rather wait six hours than six weeks. >> reporter: he's not alone. at this office in south san jose, you'll have to wait more than nine weeks to get an online appointment. now som

wait times at the dmv have jumped in recent months. now a central valley lawmaker is pushing to audit the dmv. capitol bureau reporter kody leibowitz has the story tonight.. walking into your local d-m-v without an appointment is taking some people several hours... as of 3-o'clock monday afternoon...we looked at the dmv wesbite for six different field offices across the state. in the bay area -- without an appointment could take anywhere from 1 hour and a half to 3 hours. and in the central valley -- anywhere from an hour 45 to 2 hours and 45 minutes. the d-m-v says one reason for the wait time increase is people applying for a new federally mandated drivers license known as "real i-d". asm. jim patterson (r-fresno) "the waiting times have exploded..." fresno assemblymember jim patterson says his office has been fielding complaints from constituents. he is calling on an audit of the dmv once legislators return from summer recess. the assemblymember also doesn't believe the wait times are accurately reflected online.. asm. jim patterson

we are at the claremont dmv, opening an hour earlier at 7:00 a.m. to accommodate for the surge of customers they are experiencing across the state. there are reports of people waiting nine hours to be seen at the dmv. this is due to the real id, folks getting in line to get that federally compliant id card. they will need it by 2020 to fly domestically without a passport. the department was awarded $23 million to extend hours, and there have been complaints over the long wait times at offices. some lawmakers are calling for the dmv to be audited over the delays. >> january came and went, and we have seen nothing. >> we opened in january, crowds weren't coming in. we closed down, reevaluated. >> reporter: 14 field offices across the state will open at 7:00 a.m. four days a week, and saturday hours will be expanded from 43 to 60 offices. they want to remind people that you can do a lot online or by mail, and you're encouraged to make an appointment so you don't have to wait for hours. >> will people be able to take their driver's test on saturdays? >>
