we are a primary destination here in lubbock, when people come to lubbock they come to see the center. buddy has a large following of fans in places as far away as the u.k., as far away as australia, and many of those fans make repeat visits here to lubbock to see sites around town that are associated with buddy, to come to the center and see the artifacts of his life, to visit the cemetery, and just to talk about how important buddy's music was to them growing up, or how they came to buddy's music through their parents and grandparents. so we are very excited that not only are there fans of buddy's generation that still come to visit us, but the younger generations are now coming here to the center and learning about buddy and sort of passing on what was important about buddy's life and music. next, recent visit to lubbock texas. you are watching american history tv all weekend every weekend on c-span3. >> it is a huge agricultural area. even though we have over 250,000 people just in lubbock proper, not including the surrounding communities, we are called the hub of the area, but is still revolves around agriculture. one thing we have learned is how agriculture does, whether it succeeds or fails, if it has a good year or bad, it affects the rest of the economy in the community. at the heart of everything is a passion for education. in about 2001, a group of civic leaders, some involved in agriculture, some in government, came together and saw a massive collection of agricultural artifacts. harvesters,ows, cotton related artifact. they decided they needed to be on display for the public. we did not have a museum. they established the museum of agriculture with the help of bayer crop science. their global cotton headquarters are based right here in lubbock. this area used to be big ranches, millions of acres. s

merged, neither one was named lubbock. it took lubbock as their name. they merged and picked up some of the buildings, because they one would holdings built platforms, and they pick them up and move them to what would be downtown today. this is the deeper district. the entertainment district, live music, there is a theater up or on our right, which was a movie theater at one time that has been saved, and it has live music. is buddy holly hall. is a privately funded, $150 million performing arts center. buddy holly was -- he is elvis presley and a few others and inventing rock and roll. he had a very short career in the late 1950's. the beatles claim buddy holly was their influence. in cannot kick a rock musicians, particularly with talk aboutllers who what buddy holly means to them. so what a good acre -- guetta lubbockite.also a vietnam war memorial, and a lot of her pieces are on the texas tech kansas -- campus. in 1923, the texas state legislature decided they needed a university. lubbock was only 6600 people at the time. amarillo was much larger. us

miles south of lubbock all the way to the top of the panhandle. to 5.6 bales in this area this year. we are more than half of texas. about one fourth of the united states, grown right here. began in the northeast, there was some in virginia, the carolinas, georgia. that part of the united states was populated first as part of the reason. cotton was grown, and the invention of the cotton gin escalated the growth of cotton. we have taken the cotton gin from the eli whitney time in 1793. before that, the individual separated the lead from the seed and about one pound per day was all they could do. dresstton gin, it would 50 pounds per day. we have a time, using five different time periods, the progression of the equipment of the cotton gin, going from hand waterpowered, internal combustion and electrical powered. our final phase, stage of the con gin, the machine will do about 10,000 pounds per hour versus 50 pounds per day with the invention of the continent gin. -- cotton gin. we just expanded on the efficiency and speed. it's a pretty neat exhibit

that's unlike lubbock and amarillo. i suspect another thing that keeps us going is the -- military presence. we've got several air bases in west texas that are big ones. and that -- that impacts us in many ways but then there's also military presence in the sense of like el paso has a huge, huge fort bliss and so we've got that kind of thing. that, you know, it was -- military presence that really boomed fort worth and some way it is boomed lubbock when -- when the airport came in 19 -- well during world war i. military airport that is. so those thing are all facts that dominates the economy. but west texas has also a lot of colleges who got a huge run here at texas tech 38,000 students i think, as of this spring. that impacts us a lot too medical facilities in -- west texas and lubbock are are well, especially lubbock medical facilities dominate our city for goodness sax. we have people coming from all over west texas and receive treatment. in -- lubbock. society and culture of west texas is pretty diverse. it's domina

here to lubbock. those that he toured with and developed friendships with and recorded -- and record them in his own studio. i do not think that buddy would have stopped recording his own music or would have stopped performing, but i know that that was an exciting element that he wanted to explore and add to his expertise. life, the end of buddy's this would be late 1958, he made a trip to lubbock to visit -- visit his family and christmas. then, we turn to new york. the decision was made for various reasons to go on another musical tour. it was very hastily put together. unfortunately, not well put together, because it was tackle some of the coldest parts of the united states at the worst time of the year, in the winter. the musicely, corporation that put it together heat or they would break down frequently. toward the end of january, at this point in buddy's life, he had separated from his original bandmates, not for any reason of animosity, but mostly location, after he married he decided to stay i

just a good old lubbock boy. good-natured is also a lubbock resident. she did the sculpture at the vietnam memorial in washington dc. there's a number of other texan campus. we're driving now for the tech campus created in 1923 by the state legislature. they decided they needed a university of texas and we didn't have one and lubbock was only 6600 people at that time and amarillo was much larger. a view which is north of us is 25,000 citizens today with in times of size, plainview is larger than the butt there's a very influential state in lubbock and he and others made certain that the legislature chose what was to be called texas technological college to be in love so where not even 100 years old yet . as colleges go, it's fairly young. this is the administration building though it's the first building on campus, built in prairie in the1920s. you see the back there , was a texas governor who hailed from lubbock, the airports name is that elementary school but he was a big part of artistry. you can see through our ride these are cotton fields. you're i
