fire that forced evacuations in the south bay. the news starts right now, thank you for joining us. terry has the night off. that breaking news in the hills, a fire burned 300 acres, and it's sending smoke in the sky. there's evacuation orders in effect. nbc bay area joins us live from near the fire lines with the latest information. >> reporter: i can tell you the fire's 25% contained. i just talked with cal fire, and the fire has grown to 300 acres. you can see the blackened hillside just behind these large homes. fortunately, firefighters were able to launch an aggressive air fight, which you're seeing right now. they dropped water from several helicopters, using air tankers, they were able to drop flame retardant, forming a line that prevent ee eed flames from movi forward. there's dozens of homes in the area, and we talked to some people who were already packing their belongings, but so far, they've personally not been asked to evacuate. still, they are keeping a very close eye on this fire. >> started close to where we are r

let's check it all out and start in the south bay. it is also 83 downtown san jose and 94 today in concord and in pittsburgh. oakland today reaching 71 degreesin half-moon bay. san francisco mostly in the 50s and low 60s. mission district will be 57 degrees and 87 here. santa rosa 86 degrees. it will be a warm day. if you're going out they have been killing it this season. we are going to have great weather as we head into this evening. it is 62 degrees at first pitch and cooling down with breezy winds a skies. as you make plans to go before a workout today it will be in the upper 70s as we go into early -- or late morning. you might want to head out there a little bit earlier. we are still stuck in this weather pattern with very hot temperatures. by the end of the week into next week there will be slight cooling for the pacific northwest that could edge its way in. it is great news as we continue to monitor what's happening with the car fire. we'll have more updates on that and i'm also posting updates on facebook and twitter at kari

here's a look at the south bay. temperatures expected to hit 90. 93 morgan hill. 62 half moon bay. 68 pacifica. so another 30-degree difference between the coast and the east bay the south bay. temperatures in the mid-90s for antioch and brentwood. but san francisco upper 60s. yesterday san francisco hit the upper 70s. so it's going to be noticeably cooler at the coast. st. helena 96. triple digits for lakeport and clearlake. i want to show you the southern portions of the sierra just south of lake tahoe. thunderstorm chances are increasing. dry lightning associated with this, and wind gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour. so where's that coming from? that monsoonal moisture. that ridge of high pressure causing a lot utae air. thealit storms, lightning strike to expand into parts of nevada and the sierra for today. and then again tomorrow. but look it gets a little closer to lake tahoe tomorrow. same on friday. there's a slim chance we could see some of that precipitation work its way into the hills of the bay area. but fo

the biggest impact would be widespread cloud cover from the north bay to the south bay. temperatures in the 60s from the south bay to the tri valley and also looking it at the clouds from the north bay to the east bay. it's going to feel kind of strange outside. i know it's hard for us to get through some of these changes when we've got the clouds and heat bubbling up together. by the afternoon tomorrow, clouds try to break up a little bit. so we'll have breaks of sun in thayer. on -- there. we'll see clouds trying to clear out by 6:00 p.m. the humidity and clouds rolling across, it will feel weird. ly -- low 90s for concord. and for the peninsula, 80 in redwood city. and for the north bay, maybe you're going to wine country, three-day weekend coming your way, lucky you, 86 in napa and 84 in sonoma. san francisco sees the clouds start to push out once we hit saturday's forecast. mild, 72 degrees. and for cities away from the coast line, we lose any humidity and the clouds on saturday. but temperatures do go hotter in the forecast up to 95. and low the 90s into next tuesd

we are following breaking news in the south bay. a fire ripped through a well flown three star restaurant. >> today in the bay bob is live there to show that damage left behind. bob, this is the first time they experience add fire. another one happened what four years ago? >> reporter: correct. we were out here four years ago when they had much more destruction. you can see the fire from last flight. nowhere near as damaging. it appears the start of that kitchen door, that rectangular piece of metal spread to the back wall. santa clara fire department says there is some minor damage inside. nowhere near as destructive as the fire from back in 2014. fire started around 9:00 last night. this restaurant was already closed. it is closed today and closed yesterday. no one inside. fire department tells us they had the fire out in 15 minutes. as i mentioned, it appeared to start near the kitchen door. hay had ho to cut a roof. the cause is unknown. so far tells us nothing appears to be suspicious and we do not know when it will reopen. aga
