a thai navy s.e.a.l. and that underscored how challenging this will be and it could take hours and the parents won't know for a long time, all of the parents, whether their sons will come out safely from the back of that mountain behind me. >> david, this is such an international effort at this point. but the decision on who comes out first actually comes down to those boys, correct? >> reporter: it does. imagine the human drama unfolding in that cave system. the governor telling us it will be up to the boys and to a consulting doctor who is assessing their health, who will decide to go first. who will be the first one. and that first boy that they pull through is so important because then they get to test the entire theory how they will get the kids out, through this zero visibility tunnel under the earth in the water through possibly some glow sticks they mark some sense of where they are going with the specialist divers. imagine that decision. there will be several boys i'm sure ready to do it but some

divers and five thai navy s.e.a.l.s being voinvolved. this is after a diver died after delivering supplies to them in the cave. talk about the rescuers. >> that is always the concern. the rescuer doesn't want to be the person who has to be rescued. but as this one case with a thai navy s.e.a.l. showed, diving is very dangerous. it can be anything from lack of oxygen to embolus, something blocking their bloodstream, all of these things can cause death in diving. and especially when you have a long five-hour dive, that's going to be something everyone is concerned about. >> some of the letters that went from the kids to their parents, it sort of struck me -- it reestablished how young they were, talking about things like what they wanted to eat when they left. is it possible that due to their age that this wasn't something that they really recognized, just the gravity of their situation? >> i've said before that in many ways their younger age is somewhat of a blessing. because not only are they, as you mentioned, mentally they probably don

there is a big support team with soldiers from the thai military and divers from the thai navy but it was candid it did not have experience working in these conditions and they welcome the international support that they have to use the experience wisely and the rationale is no point tiring eve ryo ne rationale is no point tiring everyone and wasting experience and energy, let people take their time, come back tomorrow, knowing the rescue method can succeed and knowing they can make it happen for the rest of the people stuck in the cave, but it will need more time. there are still risks. it is raining slightly now and the risk always was if rain started the water levels would increase and it was said they would increase and it was said they would speed that rescue up if it happened but at the moment it looks like they are taking care and putting the plan into operation and it is succeeding. four boys have been taken to hospital. how did they decide which boys to bring out first? may have had doctors in the cave over the weekend assessing the condition of the boys. the cave diving expe

it was three -- one doctor and three thai navy seals. chaperoning, if you will for the last couple days. just making sure that they were safe, kind of keeping their spirits up and the heros, last ones who came out, making sure these guys all stayed alive. that's why there was a doctor on hand. >> there's another hero involved in this. >>reporter: a huge cast. >> we keep talking about this as a remarkable outcome and thrilled. but there's another hero and part of a tragedy. this is the former thai navy seal who died z last friday while bringing supplies to those trapped in the cave and in fact triggered the concerns about oxygen levels and why they needed to expe dit this. tell us more about them, matt. >> reporter: petty officer, who left the military, former thai navy seal back in 2006. he's been out of the military for more than 10 years, and he had a job in a bangkok international airport but it goes to show how closely connected he felt he was with the military, more than 10 years after ef left he still raised his hand and volunteere

we got some information earlier from the thai navy teams. they explained that each boy would be shepherded through by two expect divers, so the boys would feel their presence as they were moved through. there was a guide rope that was set up so rather than being able to look you're going, people would move through bit by bit. the corridors are so narrow. that was part of the problem. it was not going out at one angle, they we re not going out at one angle, they were going up and down and some of the best divers in the world were saying this was a for them. let's remind you how things have unfolded over the past 2a hours. the mission to rescue the boys and their football coach began at around ten o'clock local time. we know that four boys have been brought to safety a nd four boys have been brought to safety and they are at the local chiang rai hospital. the operation has come to a close. i have seen of facebook post from the thai navy seals wishing their supporters good night. the operation will continue tomorrow. plenty more on our website.

we just heard from the thai navy seals that the four divers -- they are waiting for the four divers, the three seals and the one doctor -- to come out of the cave. they got the kids and the coach out first, they are waiting for the divers and the doctor. hopefully we can bring you that good news shortly. in the meantime, let's go to the hospital. matt rivers is outside the hospital where the boys have been taken one after the oth after the other as they have been rescued to get the health care they need. matt, what are you seeing? >> john it was just a minute ago that it was ambulance number 11 that just went behind us. that means that boys nine, ten, and 11 have now arrived here at the hospital. we're expecting the 12th boy and coach to be following up shortly after that. they're treated at a field hospital, they are airlifted to close by and they are brought to this hospital. as soon as they get here they are brought upstairs to the eighth floor. there is a special unit that has been set up for several days where these boys go. there's a concern that the immune systems of the boys
