and so i'm not surprised that he picked judge cavanaugh. all of these issues have got to be brought out in his hearing. and i intend to probe him on his positions regarding environmental protection laws. there are definite patterns to judge cavanaugh's dissents. >> and you will have a meeting with him, you but you decided to cancel. has it still been canceled? >> yes. and the reason remains. it was after the michael cohen guilty pleas and manafort's conviction on eight counts that i said considering that the president picked judge cavanaugh in my yview because of judge cavanaugh's position in terms of the president's powers and the limitations to any civil or criminal proceedings, i thought you know, the president did not deserve my sitting with his nominee, but of course i will be at the hearing and i will ask junk ca judge cavanaugh all kinds of questions relating to this and so many areas. >> but if he is confirmed everyone by a narrow margin, he will be in your eyes a legitimate u.s. supreme court justice? >> my saying that i would not

explained that, and i quote again, the democratic strategy is to demand to see every document that crossed cavanaugh's desk while he served as part president george w. bush is -- secretary from 2003-2006. in other words the democratic leaders are demanding these documents in order to needlessly delay the process rather than for legitimate purposes. but these tactics aren't going to work. let me address some of the minority leaders specific points. he says that traditionally the senate judiciary committee sends a bipartisan letter requesting documents and he said that we should have sent out this letter to weeks ago. what the minority leader fails to point out is that my staff worked extensively with the ranking member staff to attempt to identify specific staff secretary records that might be of some interest to the democrats. but the democratic staff was not interested in a reasonable compromise, including my attempts to get them even more documents than the up to 1 million pages of documents that were already in the process of receiving. after multiple rounds of negotiation the ranking member staff

senate has begun confirmation hearings for brett cavanaugh. the judiciary committee chairman announced today that brett cavanaugh will start his confirmation hearing on september 4. officials say the hearing is expected last three or four days. trump nominated him to the highest court last month. to fill the spot left by anthony kennedy. to make new details on tariffs, trump announce them on twitter. thing i just authorized a doubling of tariffs on steel and aluminum with respect to turkey as their currency, slides rapidly downward against a very strong dollar. he goes on to say aluminum will not be 20% of deal 50%. our relations with turkey are not good at this time.>>> u.s. has been trying unsuccessfully to get turkey to release an american pastor being held on espionage charges. >>> the u.s. is the biggest importer of turkish deal, and there are also concerns the turkeys currency problems could hurt european banks. the dow lost 196 points, the nasdaq was down 52 points, and the s&p slate 20 point ending a five-week winning streak. >>> still

cavanaugh say, do, or right ring that time that we ought to know before he becomes the swing vote on the united states supreme court for more than a generation. the second issue i raised goes back to an earlier time when heap became -- when he came to the committee under oath. i asked questions about his role when it came to the detention of combatants. what he had to say, and i didn't bring my glasses so this may be a struggle, but i asked him about his role and he said i did not, i was not involved and was not involved in the questions about the roles governing detention of combatants and so i witht have the involvement that issue of combatants. a paraphrased that because i didn't have the glasses. i sent him a letter a year later, when there was a press release that said he was personally at the hearing or at one of the meetings relating to the detention of combatants. when he told me under oath he had no involvement, it later turns out he did have involvement. he volunteered at one of these meetings. when i asked him today, he tried to draw a distinction between those combatants
