it's part of a storm system that extends from georgia to vermont. all of that water caused college lake dam to fill beyond capacity. the high water started to recede overnight, but more rain is forecast for today. laura podesta is here in new york with more on this. good morning, laura. >> good morning, don. that's the concern. if that dam breaks, the city of virginia could be flooded with 17 feet of water in under ten minutes. for residents of lynchburg, virginia, it was a night of high anxiety and rising floodwaters. after days of severe storms, the college lake dam is saud to be in fear of failing. >> the rescue boats are here and have been searching around the apartments as you can see behind me, and they have right now -- our latest count, they've gotten about ten people out. so -- and they're still getting some more folks out. >> authorities are closely monitoring the dam for any kind of structural failure. fears that it would collapse came at the end of a day when as much as 6 inches of rain fell in the area. the dam isn't the only danger. >>
