he's trying to hold off a challenge against beto o'rourke. kristen how's the rally? >> reporter: dana, we all know how much president trump cares about crowd size. this crowd is not going to disappoint. the first person in line got here at 10 a.m. yesterday around 200 people camped out overnight. these folks, what time did you get here? >> 9:30. >> reporter: 9:3024 morn. folks are waiting for hours to get in tonight and see president trump and senator cruz. the other draw is the highly contentious relationship between these two men. who can forget what the two said to one another during the 2016 campaign. the president called him lying ted. the senator called him a pathological liar, coward. this is politics and 2018. they each need each other. senator cruz, he needs president trump to help him get out the vote in what's become an uncomfortably close race against beto o'rourke. senator cruz was asked whether president trump was a friend or foe. here's how he responded. >> he's the president. he's the president. i work with the president in delivering on our promises.

i think beto o'rourke, also, though, he's going up against an incumbent. stacey abrams is within .6%, but she is not going up against an incumbent. bait toe o'rourke has done a great job with fundraising but that doesn't help with all the blue cities in a red state. had democrats been investing in texas over time, they just essentially ceded it to the bushes and sort of ceded it to the republicans. they've been building a grassroots strategy across the state what they should have been doing for 50 states then bait toe could use that $38 million to supplement it with real organizations that could help him win. >> is this a good look for beto o'rourke? we have seen people em grace his positivism and optism. you get to this broader point how do you react to that. there have been midterms in the past where this has happened and people goaded into going negative. was it a mistake for him to do that, to take that lower road, to hit ted cruz when he had been sort of looking beyond him, looking to the future? >> i think the way he did it was a mistake. you asked i

is the money going to do it for beto o'rourke? >> no, $38 million, setting the record, we have to applaud beto o'rourke for that. you have to look at what he's done to get that. we don't know what his cash on hand is, we don't know how much he spent to get that money. you have to spend money to raise money. at the same time, beto o'rourke, his campaign has not done two things they really needed to do. they've not really built up an outreach to the latino community or key vote that's would help him beat ted cruz. all the tv ad buys have been made between now and the election and beto's people can't really use this money. they have this cash influx. whatever is left over, what are they are going to use it on? i don't know. and money gauges and so do new voter registrations and new voter registrations throughout the country are surging. there a couple of places where it's not happy but that would be in, say, amy mcgrath's district. amy mcgrath, i'm much more bearish on her than other democrats or republicans are. you've seen the vote
