another lie from brett kavanaugh. brett kavanaugh said that judge pickering's nomination was not one he primarily handled. well, let's just say this is less than the full truth. maybe if you emphasize the words primarily, you find some shred of accuracy, but certainly not a full and appropriate presentation because it turns out that he was involved in a number of critical aspects of the pickering nomination. brett kavanaugh said he did not see or hear anything about president bush's warrantless wire-tapping program before it was publicly reported. but in some of those other documents that slipped through, we find out that he did know about them and he e-mailed john yu about the warrantless wiretapping long before the program became public. brett kavanaugh said the bush administration did not consider ideology when selecting or vetting judges, but the truth is the documents show that they did consider ideology. why did this man, brett kavanaugh, feel the need to misrepresent the truth time after time after time? he imp

kavanaugh or opposed to judge brett kavanaugh. we will be probably listening most closely to the republican senator from maine, or at least she will be one of the folks we are listening most closely to. susan collins, a key undecided vote. she says she's going to be announcing her decision in just a few hours at 3:00. our morgan radford has made her way to maine because an editorial in collins home state newspaper calls for senator collins to vote no. morgan's in bangor, maine, to get a sense of what voters are thinking, what they're saying. morgan, what have you found? >> reporter: well, craig, we do know that all eyes right now are on washington, but here in bangor, maine, all eyes are on their senator, and that's susan collins. as you mentioned, she's one of the biggest question marks in how this kavanaugh vote is going to go, and the reaction here is intense. it's personal, and it's very, very split. in fact, 49% of the state in a recent poll said they do not want her to vote to confirm brett kavanaugh, even you can see two of

this afternoon, she weighed in on the brett kavanaugh hearings, here's part of what she said. >> brett kavanaugh said that the political hit job directed at him was being done on behalf of the clintons among other people. your response? certainly brett kavanaugh could go that way. he expressed some partisan anger in his hearing, but he has hired four law clerks for his first supreme court term, all of whom are women, and he was very explicit in saying that during his hearing, he said this is who i am, and both susan collins and lisa murkowski who voted differently on him but are the two moderate republican women in the senate have said after meeting with him that they do not think he would overturn roe v. wade. so i think kavanaugh has been giving hints that he is going to want to protect his legacy with women. >> what about this "washington post" headline, erin, which i want to get your reaction to, with kavanaugh confirmed impeachment could follow and it points to murmurs of impeachment even before the allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced where opponents were fixated on whether he lied under oath. specifically democrats have sidestepped the issue of impeachment, but do you think it's likely there could be a renewed investigation of him? >> there could be

it can't be because brett kavanaugh is the essential man. and so given all of these doubts, given all of these allegations, given his precedent-breaking performance before the judiciary committee, why stick with brett kavanaugh? and this is what i come back to when i try to answer that question for myself. i know that it's hard being a republican today. your party doesn't look like it did ten years ago because you have a president who really doesn't have an ideological core. he doesn't have a set of beliefs. he's a cultive personality. he makes it up as he goes along. it's difficult being a republican in congress today because you're -- because the party is just fundamentally different than it was five years ago. and there is very little that binds together a president without a -- an ideological core and republicans here in the senate who do, right, who do have a set of beliefs that they are fairly regularly consistent about. and i know that's uncomfortable. and so i fear that the reason that the senate republican majority is sticking with

the battle over brett kavanaugh confirmation has divided the u.s. i should never say political opponents should rot in hell or whatever the phrase was but it is hard to maintain stability in the way that the democratic party has behaved in this. joining us now, he has a brilliant book out later which we will be talking about, but i would love your take on all this because you're such an interesting commentator. where you think this leaves us, this whole last few weeks two i think it leaves us broad, angry and more divided than ever. one of the irony of the story, something we haven't heard much talk about is that brett kavanaugh is a conservative who flourished in liberal institutions at yale, at yell law school, he is someone who had numerous democrats come out and defend him early on this process. he routinely hired liberal students who praise him and worked to support his nomination to the supreme court. he is very much an establishment conservative, someone who is always working across the aisle, trying to build bridges. his philosophy is based

that's absurd, but that's brett kavanaugh's view on the second amendment. so what i'm saying is this, i didn't need the tragic drama of the last few weeks to know how i felt about brett kavanaugh serving on the supreme court. i was an early no vote and i don't apologize for coming to that conclusion months ago. but that doesn't mean that i'm not entitled to have a strong opinion on what has played out before the eyes of america during the month of september, and it doesn't mean that i don't have the right to make the argument here that for those in the senate who weren't as sure as i was that what happened in the last 30 days should be dispositive on the future of this nomination. i said at the outset that i thought brett kavanaugh is the most dangerousnominee to the court in my lifetime. that opinion is one i only arrived at after hearing his testimony before the committee last week. and i think it's really important for senators to understand the pandora's box they are opening by voting yes, endorsing his performance, his demeanor, and what i would argue
