joe manchin has been very popular in his home state. a former governor who has now been in the september for a couple of terms. he's in a tough race as well this november against the state's attorney general patrick morrisey. president trump has been to west virginia seven times in the time that he's been in office. brought a lot of pressure there. it is also notable that manchin and flake are good friends across the aisle. you could almost imagine a scenario where jeff flake decides he's voting no but manchin would be a yes. or you'd have the combination where murkowski could be a no and she's got reasons that have to do with alaska's native american community and judge kavanaugh's record on federal lands and sovereignty as an issue. that's not the thing we talk about typically in national news but in alaska, native american sovereignty, incredibly important. and so there's a dynamic amongst this remaining group that is both political and personal. and we don't yet know if they're sharing their strategy but that is often the case in th

joe manchin is in a tough re-election fight. chuck schumer has given him a lot more leeway. vote the way he needs to vote to keep his constituents happy in west virginia. i don't think there's going to be a clapback against joe manchin from the democratic party. it's part of the reason he tried so hard to make sure he wasn't the deciding vote on this. lisa muir cow skill is a woman who lost a republican primary in 2010 and won as a write-in candidate with a name like murkowski. he's politically powerful as a local figuring in alaska. also the republicans' only female committee chairman in the senate of i've major committee. collins chairs a standing committee on aiming. lisa is a powerful figure within the republican and i don't see her being punished for this. she made a gracious move toward steve daines tonight saying she would vote present to do what's called a pairing essentially to allow steve daine subpoena to stay away. she wanted it to be a big statement about how these nominations should be handled with more grace and class. >> jonathan, you get the quick last word.

joe donnelly voted no. joe manchin on the procedural measure voted yes. we will see if he continues that way. all signs point to yes and that that will continue, but in terms of the politics of how this plays out in the senate. the house is a different story, but in the senate, it's very, very fascinating. i want to pull up something that another red state candidate who is a former governor of tennessee is running to make that red seat blue. he earlier in the week said he was not so sure and in this red state, he got booed, he said he would be a yes in the senate. i was prepapaired to say yes prior to dr. ford's coming forward. while the events make it a much closer call and i am missing key pieces of informs that a sitting senator has, i am still a yes. that's a state where there are pockets of urban democratic votes, but overwhelmingly a very pro republican, pro trump state. the same goes for west virginia. the other states where there are more democrats, north dakota aside, and they are saying it's better for us not to suppress our base and vote no. >>
