to welcome you to arlington. i have had the privilege in my life of seeing this military world from many angles, as a dependent, as the son of a wounded combat soldier, as an officer, and as a leader in the pentagon. i have spent a lifetime watching those who have worn the battles and i have sign the through the eyes of my elementary school classmates in ft. bragg whose fathers did not come back from vietnam. it may seem a little strange that someone with my background, i am constantly contemplating the meaning of service and what it means to be a veteran. i think general eisenhower had it about right. a few months after he was inaugurated, he gathered 40 korean war soldiers on the president yacht of williamsburg. some were horribly disfigured. others were missing limbs. you live to remind your fellow citizens why they sleep soundly at night. this day reminds all americans that they sleep soundly at night because of the sacrifices of millions of ordinary men and women. today marks the 100th anniversary of the sad

arlington is the smallest geographic county in the country, how many does it take to support arlington county? small geographically, we have a population of about 239,000. so we are midsized, population wise. we have 160 5000 registered voters, and 54 polling places. i would like to add a couple more before the presidential election. the problem is that the general assembly, in preparation for redistricting has frozen polling lines february 1. we need to move quickly after this election, we have not had time to address the future, that's a project, everything is postelection. will lookelection we at the problem areas in arlington, where we could potentially add some more polling places. these are places where we know we will have population growth, because there will be development projects that open between now and the presidential election. so it's always planning ahead, and we are looking at the data, you will talk about data, always look at your past data when you plan an election. the comparable election a couple of years ago to compare how many ballots you are going to order. i d
