kpix5's devin fehely is live where crews are still monitoring those hotspots. devin? >> reporter: people living here in the santa cruz mountains were understandably anxious this afternoon. this fire broke out in an area with steep, rugged, wooded hillsides. some crews are still working in the distance on those very same hillsides, but a quick response is credited with keeping this fire largely contained. initially firefighters battled the blaze from the air hoping to keep it in check just long enough for crews to climb up the steep wooded hillsides where it was burning deep in the santa cruz mountains. >> we have four air tankers in orbit now that are dropping actively on the fire and we have three helicopters that are actively dropping on the fire as well. >> reporter: their strategy appears to have worked cornering and corralling the fire to 25 acres and buying them time for reenforcements to move in on the ground. >> looking outside the top of the hill and there was a bunch of smoke at the top of the hill maybe 10 blocks away. then i heard all the fire engines pass
