elie hoenig and chief political analyst gloria borger is here as well. we talked a lot about michael cohen before. what is happening right now, this cuts to the heart of the russia investigation. >> reporter: look, it absolutely does and i want to sort of take a step back for a minute, kate, to put this all in context because i went back and looked at the story i wrote more than a year ago, september 8th, 2017, when we first got this letter of intent about trump tower moscow and now i realize that i was fed a pack of lies. that doesn't feel very good, but it was the scenario that michael cohen's team was putting out there which was that this was a deal that never went anywhere and it was quite -- quite stunning deal, by the way, because trump would have been given $4 million in an upfront fee without costs. this would have been a spa in this trump tower moscow that would have been named after ivanka and its clear that ivanka had some involvement in all of this, and that i was told, you know, that this went nowhere because we were -- we didn't think we sh

what's your take, gloria, though, on this whole issue? >> well, look, i think that you have to sort of set the scene here. donald trump is running for president. he's heading into the iowa caucuses, right? michael cohen is trying to protect him. this deal is continuing to go on. he's telling the press. he's telling everyone, i did no business in russia. it's not a crime to lie to the press. we know that. but he is saying, i have no, you know, dealings with russia. meanwhile, he's saying putin is a great guy and putin loves me. when, in fact, he was having dealings with russia. >> they had a lot of intent, a signed letter of intent, gloria, for any skeptics. >> i did the story on the letter of intent in september of 2017, and it was, you know, i was not told the truth about it. i was told that it ended because the deal collapsed in january, not june, so the timing, you know, the timing was off. but that was the story that mr. cohen was telling to the congressional committees. but this was -- this was michael cohen trying to protect donald

donald trump, you're the president of the united states. >> but, gloria, the reason the president and other republicans are repeating it is because it works. right? >> reporter: look, it does work. this isn't the first time we've heard the president allege voter fraud. we heard him allege voter fraud during the general election when he lost the popular vote by 3 million. and we established a commission, which was then disbanded without proving anything. i would argue that no voter fraud has been alleged or proven in florida or anywhere else during this election. it's been alleged by the president, but nobody who is dealing with all of this has been alleging it. what the president is doing is stirring the pot and trying to kind of disqualify should the tables turn and should a democrat win, for example. i think he's sort of sowing the seeds of all of these questions so that his supporters will say it was rigged. >> as we've been talking, we've actually just now learned that the president will be going to california this weekend, as the state deals with the deadliest wildfires in their
