hillary clinton and james comey. and if this happened in another country, we'd have the state department saying, it's no longer a democracy. just because he was stopped by his counsel informing him it was an impeachable offense does not take away from the fact that the president essentially wanted to break the law. and i for one think it is something that doesn't warrant an investigation, i mean, the republicans should be investigating this tomorrow before the democrats come in. because they're a blank check for this guy, they won't. but it is one of the most -- i think it is amongst the most outrageous things that have come out of this white house in two years of outrages. the things people thought were a fantasy that could occur are actually things donald trump wanted to do, to not just hillary clinton, a person who won the democratic nominee and was his competitor, but james comey, who was a central part of the mueller investigation. i don't think there's any way to look at this that isn't -- that shouldn't scare

justice department to prosecute hillary clinton and former fbi director, james comey. let's bring in cnn's laura jarrett over at the justice department. laura, let me just read the first couple sentences of this "new york times" article, which is explosive. the headline, trump wanted to order justice department to prosecute comey and clinton. president trump told the white house counsel in the spring of this year that he wanted to order the justice department to prosecute two of his political adversaries, his 2016 challenger, hillary clinton and the former fbi director, james comey, according to two people familiar with the conversation. the article continues. the lawyer, that would be the white house lawyer, don mcgahn, rebuffed the president, saying he had no authority to order a prosecution. mr. mcgahn said while he could request an investigation, that too could prompt accusations of abuse of power. to underscore his point, mr. mcgahn had white house lawyers write a memo for mr. trump warning that if he asked law enforcement to investigate his rivals, he could face

you've just spoken, i understand to james comey. what's his reaction to this news that the president was asking to prosecute him? >> i was just chatting with him earlier this evening, john. tonight he's shaking his head. this is the kind of stuff that had him so worried when he was the fbi director. you think about the incidence of him sitting before the president and the president demanding loyalty from the fbi director in this kind of mafia-like fashion. fast forward to the oval office where the president is attempting to interfere with the fbi's criminal investigation into michael flynn, the national security adviser. this is what had him worried then. this is what he's been so vocal about now and speaking out. he wrote a book about it. i think he's also pleased the new york times made clear that president trump and his allies have been lying when they claimed he divulged classified information which he did not. i don't think he's surprised by the lies. i think it's just another indication, instance of this white house, this pres

so issues, for example, around the firing of james comey they would not engage on that his lawyers have told us because they believe that is under his article 2 power to make those sorts of decisions, but they were willing to give written answers on matters dealing with the campaign season and so that is our understanding of the content of the answers provided to the special counsel. the president has said that he wrote the answers and then they were sort of supervised or approved by his legal team. we don't know exactly how that process unfolded in terms of how they decided when his answers were sufficient, but the president said he read over them a few times. he also had some revisions to the answers. big questions we don't know, we're only hearing from the president's legal side. the mueller team has been notably tight-lipped throughout this whole process, so we don't know what they wanted to know with respect to any issues of alleged obstruction of justice or conduct while in office, and if they will be satisfied with the written answers provided. now, the legal team from the presid
