josh: no, they don't. the screaming headline in the new issue of "business week" is that things get even crazier from here. it's hard to imagine but now that democrats have the subpoena power, it's all but guaranteed. we saw in trump's press conference this week he started out by saying yeah, maybe this is a good thing and we can make deals and i'll be friends with the democrats and in the next breath he said if they investigate me, it's all out war. if i were a betting man, i would bet on all out war. i think most people on capitol hill are, too. jason: and even the day after the midterms when you had trump sort of unchained. there at the white house. doing this press conference. quickly followed by nancy pelosi, quickly followed by jeff sessions, forced resignation. that was day one. josh: that's our next two years. and imagine, guys, imagine what is going to happen when democrats try and get trump's tax returns, how angry and upset, contentious american politics is going to get then. carol: i love how y

josh: he is worried, like most trump supporters. he says he will have subpoenas flying and all of these people in the administration were -- protected by republican control will have to answer. this will be a real thorn in the side of the trump administration. whither it is microsoft border or the firing of jeff sessions, this is now something democrats will have the power to investigate. carol: are the subpoenas going to make a difference? josh: congressional subpoenas have traditionally been powerful. but democrats and republicans have stonewalled them in the past. that is why progressives have set up outside groups like judicial watch, which made a name for itself filing lawsuits. democrats now have their own groups, american oversight, who were going to try and bolster the strength of the subpoenas by using the power of an outside court to try to compel the white house to have officials come and testify. jason: we were talking about this massive shift in the suburbs away from the republicans and to the democrats. that was a huge

josh: i think they do. traditionally democrats have used this power for checks and balances, accountability investigations. the problem is we have seen recent republican chairman to have used this for political theater. the whole benghazi hearings got very extreme. there is a danger for democrats if they abuse this subpoena power to embarrass or humiliate trump officials, it could cost them the 2020 election. jason: 2020 was exactly where i was going next. all of this happens as we move toward the reelect. josh: the reelect started yesterday. we are already in the middle of the 2020 election. framing the backdrop is this fighting in congress, more contentiousness. that is where we are heading. it will be a heck of an election. carol: there are so many political stories in the magazine this week. we just wrapped up the midterms it let's bring in the editor of that midterms. -- we just wrapped up the midterms. let's bring in the editor of "bloomberg businessweek," joel weber. you covered this story a lot of d

but what he really said was that josh hawley is leading in the polls. i wanted to apologize for my mistake and set the record straight especially since to complicate matters even further, president trump is now tweeting that there is a rumor put out by the democrats that josh hawley left the arena last night early, he met me at the plane when i arrived. and stayed until the very end, i said good-bye to him and left before he did. deception. that rally was the second time in four days president trump has come to missouri to try to help him beat claire mccaskill in the closing days of this race. he's been trying to paint her as carbon copy of hillary clinton while she's been trying to distance herself from her own party, even going so far as to call some of them "crazy democrats." this is a state that president won by nearly 20 points and she knows if she wants to win a third term she will need some of the people that voted for him in 2016 to vote for her in 2018. she just voted at this polling place right outside st. louis. hawley just voted an hour away

all right, race by race, josh? >> one of the house races i'm looking closely at is the sixth district of kentucky. it's a trump district, but the democrat who is a celebrated military veteran, amy mcgrath, is running neck and neck with andy barr. they are watching the race closely and it closes early so we will know the results pretty quickly. >> i chose pennsylvania 16. this is the kind of race that if democrats win this it will point to them having a very good night. this is a district that trump won by 20, and so depending on how that goes it might be an indicator of the whole evening. >> those house polls are tough. it doesn't seem like it really sticks. all these polls are 1-2 points and could really swing each one of these races. >> since everyone is using number six, i have the sixth district two. but peter roskam has been there since 2006 and republicans have held the seat since 1972, through all the blue waves that went to and fro in that time. but he's in the race of his life against democrat sean kasten

josh: we will have a big clash between trump and democrats. i'm looking at pressures that will fall on the democratic party. they have fodder for two years in the minority -- fought for two years in the minority. now they have oversight and control the house. that will bring pressure. the party will begin to spilt into the -- split into the governing wing, and then as many as two dozen democratic presidential candidates jockeying for primary voters. it looks to me like those groups could go in different directions. carol: this makes it difficult. josh: democrats have been saying, for two years, we will be a check on trump. that's largely why we got elected -- they got elected. if you are a presidential candidate, you are worried about standing out from the crowd of presidential contenders. one way to do that is to be the most vocally anti-trump. you have people like tom steyer, who has already spent $100 million running cable ads. that is a direction at the elected democrats -- that the elected democrats in washington do not want to go because
