you are watching sister station kabc in los angeles. they have continuing coverage of this breaking news throughout the night. the shooting happened 11:30 last night. it is still an investigation under way at the bar where this happened. 13 people dead, including the gunman. and you heard there them talking about the instincts that sometimes we now have to develop. unfortunately, shootings are all too common. people need to know how to get out of the situations. so many people impacted by not only the lives lost but people now, they are still looking to find their loved ones. were they shot? they are going hospital to hospital to see if they were brought to a different hospital, where they're at, trying to get a hold of them. one former colleague of mine is looking for his niece. that is something that's ongoing right now. >> yeah. thousand oaks in southern california. not too far from the bay area. a lot of people may have family members that live down in southern california. students who are attending the university or college in that

>> kabc reporter chris kristi, thank you. our thanks to you and the kabc team. and just a horrific scene in northern california as well. in a town called paradise, north of sacramento, families forced to drive through flames on both sides to get out of town. and not everyone made it. they've now discovered bodies after vehicles were engulfed in flames. tom llamas is there tonight, witnessing the destruction firsthand. >> reporter: tonight, the campfire raging out of control. and now our first look inside its charred wake. block after block, we see this hellish landscape that used to be the town of paradise, california. they evacuated 27,000 people, the entire town. and here's why. the flames did not stop burning everything to the ground. the grim toll only now emerging. officials locating at least five victims, all found in their cars. trapped by the fire that ripped through this town. so many residents racing tunnels of flames to get out. >> go, go, go, go. >> oh, my god. the tree is burning right next to us. >> all those homes gone. >> i can feel the heat now.

. >> one witness telling kabc, one walked up and started shooting. the eye witness we talked to described the gunman as wearing a black trenchcoat with glasses and tactical officers are in the bar. the shooter is in the bar as well, but officials are saying he is confined and not a threat to the public. they are not specifying if he has been shot or killed or arrested. also, the eyewitness told us he saw the shooter walk in and twice shoot the young woman who works just inside the door. just a terrible experience for all of the people there. the borderline bar & grill is 2,500 square feet. a big party venue. it has pool tables and food and places for line dancing. officials say hundreds of people were inside. they are confirming 11 hurt. >> again, 18 and up night. college night. we can confirm as we said moorpark college and pepperdine students and cal lutheran students. let's here now from another eye witness to the shooting. >> i was to the front door. i was talking to my step dad and i just started hearing these big pops. pop, pop, pop. there were

you have been on the fire lines helping kabc all week long. so good to see you. how are things there. >> overnight, no one knew how he was doing, only that he had been airlifted to this hospital. we just got an update saying he does not have life-threatening injuries. that is the good news here in southern california. he was hit by a car last night. it happened just after midnight. it happened in malibu on the pacific coast highway. i spoke to the chp. it sounds like it was just is an accident. they didn't make any arrests. it was not a hit and run. a local driver did hit the firefighter. he was airlifted here in thousand oaks. he and his team were helping to fight the woolsey fire. we have the latest information on that fire. it has burned 98,300 acres. the new number that just came in moments ago, 57% contained. that's up from 52%. 504 structures destroyed. 94 damaged. that firefighter works in washington. his fellow firefighters came to the hospital with him last night. the station put out a statement saying right now their focus is on the firefighters, his fa

. >> one witness told kabc that a gunman walked up and shot a security guard and entered the bar and setoff a smoke bomb and started shooting. an eyewitness we spoke with earlier, holden harrah, described the gunman with a black beard and black trenchcoat. this is a bar of 2,500 square feet and pool tables and tvs. hundreds of people were in the bar when the gunman walked in shooting. >> let's go to nick watt at the scene. nick, good morning. 2:32 in thousand oaks. what are you learning? >> reporter: as you say, the bar was pretty busy when this gunman walked in. it was college country night that started at 9:00. first calls came in at 11:20 of shots fired to police. we are told the bar wasn't packed. it was getting busier. i spoke to one eyewitness who said he heard shots and immediately hid under the pool table with other people. there was a break in the shooting. he thinks perhaps the gunman was reloadi reloading. in the moments, a number of students managed to throw bar stools through the windows and smashing the windows of the club and managed to escape. others we spoke to manag

kelly, a marine, coldtold kabc ran to safety. >> borderline was our safe space, for lack of a better term, the home for the 30 or 4045 of us from the greater ventura county area. that was our place that we went to the following week so we could be with each other. >> and look at this. kelly has a tattoo on his arm memorializing last year's shooting. at least one of the vegas survivors did not make it out of borderline alive and that's 27-year-old navy veteran telemachus orsanus. his mother said this. >> i don't want prayers, i don't want thoughts. i want gun control and i hope to god nobody else sends me any more prayers. i want gun control. no more guns! >> we should note, california has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. police say the handgun used in this shooting was obtained legally. and that conversation will continue about how to keep guns out of the hands of people like the gunman in this particular case. >> that mother made it clear, a lot of people are saying that, i'm sick of prayers, i'm sick of thoughts and good wishes, it's time for somebody to do something.

. >> and we want to go live now on the phone to kabc reporter jory rand. i know you've been there since shortly after this shooting began and you have been talking to some of these witnesses getting these really emotional interviews. tell us, are there still witnesses there now and share some of these story, these horrific stories you've been hearing there at the scene. >> reporter: yeah, it looks like the last -- the last group of people who were on scene are mostly sadly parents of loved ones who they have yet to hear from. and so that's just the next kind of gut punch of this awful story is to learn who the 11 families are and find out what they're now dealing with knowing that whoever went to this bar tonight is not coming home, that interview that you just ran, that was the first person we encountered here on scene and i asked him if he was okay, he clearly was not okay. his eyes were as red as i've ever seen anyone's and he was clearly just in shock. he was there with his father-in-law and at times his father-in-law was breaking down and he went over
