let's start with "today in the bay" kris sanchez. >> reporter: hi there. i was talking to these crews. they were going to resweep to make sure the leaves don't get caught in the drains. this morning this is what it looked like. a car got stuck in the water. a driver didn't realize how deep that water was at stockton and alameda. a driver got stuck and called for help. san joep say fire rescued that driver. city crews cleared that drain with a giant vacuum truck and moved the car but the intersection was cloetssed for hours. you can see how far the flooding goes out in each direction. you just never know how deep the water is or what is underneath. this driver takes a chance, which is not a good idea. the motto is, turn around, don't drown. according to fema, it only takes 6 inches to reach the bottom of passenger cars and that's when you can stall or lose control. we're talking about a foot of water or more that can make most cars float. that sweeper just went through. they were waiting for us to leave our locations so they can come around and clear this p

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been tracking it for us. anything new? >> we know law enforcement is trying to use the fingerprints taken off that gunman's dead body ed to try to identify him as he walked into that borderline bar & grill with the gun and smoke bombs. he didn't have any i.d. on him, so they're also looking at any tattoos on his body to see if that can indicate who he might be. meanwhile, there were folks who made it out of that bar just in the nick of time with their lives. one of them captured the gunfire. the ventura county sheriff's department says that inside the bar is a horrific scene with blood everywhere. the shooting was first reported around 11:20 last night. people inside say it was just a regular wednesday night at the country bar when the gunman walked in and started shooting. there were hundreds had of people inside at the time. many of them college students. >> i'm pretty sure i saw him. i'll never get that picture out of my head. . we dropped and we heard the gunshots. >> our friends got the bar stools and started slimming

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is where students are angry that class is still in session. kris? >> reporter: the air quality is noticeably better today here than last week, but there are a lot of students who say it's still bad enough that classes should be cancelled. >> i think it would be good to cancel classes, especially for those coming into the san jose area. >> reporter: that student hasn't signed this petition yet, but tens of thousands of others have, urging san jose state administration to change their stand. you can see the haze hanging in the air over at the san jose state/nevada and some fans opted to stay inside. thursday and friday, classes were cancelled and the university handed out masks and urged students and staff to avoid going outside. this week the advice stands, but the classes are in session. san jose state's statement on the petition drive reads in part, we truly respect the thoughtful perspectives that were shared by many sjfu students and other university community members. decisions to close a campus are never made lightly. we have made the decision

nbc bay area kris sanchez is in paradise with what the timing of this storm means for crews and evacuees. >> reporter: they're working against the clock, because although we're seeing blue sky and sunshine, there are two storms coming, and that rainfall is going to make a mess of this kind of material. it's already hard for these crews to sift through the soot and ash. add the rain, and it's going to make for a very muddy mess. we caught up with the rescue -- search and rescue team out of riverside. they were here with dogs a few moments ago. they're going site by site and making markings of what they find so the other crews don't duplicate their efforts and they can keep moving forward. also a team of meteorologists is tasked with watching the storm that they are forecasting for later this week. there is a risk of landslides as the soot and ash from the fire creates a water repellant layer, leaving the rainfall with nowhere to go, and any rainfall, again, makes the very difficult work of looking for victims even harder. >> we have very, very fine ash in many of the areas we're searching

in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. >>> we mentioned, kari, we're bringing her in to talk about when all the smoke possibly could be moving out. >> yes, it's when the rain arrives basically, so that's going to be late tuesday night for farther to the north and parts of our viewing area. the rest of the bay area sees the rain basically throughout the day from wednesday morning into the rest of the week. so here's a look at how much rain we could see across the bay area, and across the region. so we look at these numbers, and most of the bay area we're looking at about an inch. it may be higher in some of our higher elevations and are we normally see higher rainfall totals. we go up to our burn scar areas and where we currently have the camp fire going on and rainfall totals are going to be very high, potentially over five inches, as we go throughout the week. so that may cause some other concerns like runoff as well as a lot of people who are currently homeless dealing with the camp fire. we head toward the sierra, we're expecting high amounts of snow, especi

. >> we want to check in with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez as she's been watching and monitoring all of the developments. >> good morning to you. as you mentioned, we now know the gunman not only fired a weapon but set off the smoke alarms, elevating the chaos inside that bar with hundreds of people inside. there was somebody who was outside and captured the gunfire. the ventura county sheriff's department says the scene was horrific, blood everywhere. the shooting was first reported around 11:20 last night. young people were running from the bar into the darkness as law enforcement was still working to get into the bar in thousand oaks there. some of the people inside the bar say it was just a regular wednesday night at the country bar when that gunman walked in and started shooting almost immediately. pepperdine university put out a statement saying they know some of their students were there when the bullets were flying. >> our friends got the bar stools and they started slamming against the windows when we got out. >> they just tried to take cover. all we do is sit there and

nbc bay area )s kris sanchez is out there in the elements. but first let )s go to meteorologist kari hall. kari -- where )s the storm now? let's go to meteorologist kari hall. where is the storm right now? >> we are just tracking light rain as you get ready to head out for your lunch hour or throughout the afternoon. a lot of the heavier rain we have this morning has since shifted to the south and is around monterey, continuing to move away from the area. this is a break before a heavier round of storm moves in. so we are going to see the time for you to get out there and time for you to get your yard cleaned up before this heavy rain arrives. we are tracking it all with stormranger with splotches of green here and there, indicating some lighter rain. as we zoom into the south bay, you can see as you head south to morgan hill to gilroy, you can see the rain comes down just a little bit heavier, but overall, we are looking at some light rain here. as we go through the time line, going into the afternoon, still going to see a chance of showers

kris sanchez is live for what happened overnight. this is something that's really plaguing the entire bay area. >> reporter: yeah, i can show you there are skid marks at this intersection where one of those sideshows was busted last night. as you watch the video take a look at how close those spectators try to get to that action. this happened at gish road and i-80. san jose police, santa clara sheriff's department heard chatter that drivers were planning to descend on san jose and perhaps shut down the freeway. chp managed to keep the freeways open and running but drivers took to city streets instead. over on kertner avenue under highway 77, a crash. sheriff's deputies caught up with a suspected sideshow driver who was trying to flee. that driver was arrested. at oakland road and highway 101, another arrest. san jose police directed officers on the street as they spotted this suspect activity from helicopters above. communities around the bay area are battling sideshows. you might remember a few weeks ago we showed you these large c
