what impact did they have an l.a. and southern california? >> thank you for having me. my study begins in 1850 with the very first group of african-americans brought into the state when it became a state. it is a very small group. i study all the way up until the first world war. so looking at the creation of the black community in los , african-americans did a lot to settle their own communities and also to build the greater los angeles area and southern california communities as well. they made a lot of cultural contributions. the closer we get into the 20th century, which is when the big migration happened, there are a lot of contributions that african-americans made politically, you know, and those kinds of things. what motivated them to come to los angeles? >> right. area.an understudied it is kind of hard to find information about this. that is why i chose to study it. people are being brought in. of them are coming in as slaves. they are slaves in other states. in california, they are labeled as servants in other people's homes. initiallyy are coming with people

this is in between l.a. and ventura counties. but an hour ago the fire jumped the 101 so it is now threatening the communities of calabasas and malibu. so hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated. about 75,000 homes. these evacuation orders coming in the dead of night. some getting the alert through a text messages, others by door knocks. at this point, we have no idea how many homes have burned. but it is at least dozens of homes. the last official word we got was 30. but it is certainly going to be a lot more. you can see just the massive acreage covered right now by those flames. and, of course, we are only getting one perspective. now that it jumped the freeway, they closed it down about 20 minutes ago which was also a diicult challenge because you still had people in the process of evacuating. and i want to mention, this is right near the community of thousand oaks and, in fact, it is in thousand oaks. this community was dealing with the shooting yesterday. so utter devastation for these people. we are going to ke
