. >> my book is about the north dakota oil fields. north dakota's been in the news nationally a lot in the last week. democratic senator heidi heidi camp made a lot of news for deciding to vote against supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. she is one of several democratic senators who were representing states that were won heavily by donald trump in 2016. a trumpet one north dakota by about 36 percentage points and so even in the face of a very difficult reelection campaign, she chose to vote against kavanaugh and her opponent republican congressman kevin cramer is favored to win this race so part. he's come out and gone some controversy for, you know, talking about how this movement with #metoo has moved to victimization and how his members of his own family are strong women that he talked about the victimhood whereas high camp has made it an issue of sending a message to women and girls that sexual assault is not acceptable and i wanted to lead with that, so i can get into this-- i wrote about being a women in the oilfield and comi

the native american vote in north dakota. thousands of native americans in north dakota live on rural reservations where they don't have street addresses. they use p.o. boxes instead. that voter i.d. law was aimed right at them. it made it next to impossible for them to vote, especially in the kinds of numbers they have voted in in the past. native americans generally form a pretty strong vote for democrats in north dakota. their support absolutely made it possible for heidi heitkamp to squeak out a win for her senate seat in 2012 in that state. that's very clearly why republicans wrote that bill, to stop native americans from voting in large numbers, to basically put a ceiling on the number of democratic voters in north dakota and specifically to prevent heidi heitkamp from ever getting reelected. well, in the end, last week heidi heitkamp did lose. in that sense republicans in north dakota got what they wanted from their plan.

heidi heitkamp lost her seat in north dakota by double digits. a democrat winning reelection in a state that went for trump by dozens of points, it was always going to be an uphill climb. but republicans in north dakota have been laser focused on making that climb as steep as possible for heidi heitkamp since basically the day she was first elected. their plan, their mission was to make sure heitkamp would never win statewide election in their state again. and that plan started with a bill, we've talked about it a ton on this show, right after heitkamp was elected with a ton of rock solid support from native americans, republicans in the north dakota state legislature pushed through a bill that made it a new law in the state that in order to vote, you would need an i.d. with a street address on it. what that bill was quite clearly designed to do was to choke off the native american vote in north dakota. thousands of native americans in north dakota live on rural reservations where they don't have street addresses. they use p.o. boxes instead. tha

trailing by almost ten points there in north dakota. she all just gave a whole bunch of money away to other democrats to try to help them out. but arizona, that race still tied also, 46/46. how critical is president trump to these senate battleground states? >> so, if president trump won the state in 2016, he's going to be an asset for these republican senate candidates. and that polling out of tennessee, the polling out of north dakota that showed republican kevin cramer with blg well in tennessee that is important news for mitch mcconnell. that means if republicans win north dakota and tennessee they pretty much clinch the senate majority. so, if republicans continue to hold those steady leads in those states, that's a good night for mcconnell. >> dana: tell me about early voting. we've seen lots of coverage about how enthusiastic voters are. people are turning out in big numbers this early. but tell us, should we be cautious about reading too much into that? >> yeah, i don't like to get into interpreting the early voting numbers, esp

look at north dakota. what does this mean? >> oh, this means that kevin is going to cross the finish line and we'll have a new republican senator out of north dakota, thanks to the presidential tailwinds behind our gop nominees in all of those states. it's really key that i would argue in indiana, that our nominee is ahead there. our internals show that. likewise in missouri. our nominee is ahead. we're looking at a night where it might not just be 54 senate seats, it could be 55, 56. when the campaign out in new jersey tells me their internals show bob up by two over corrupt senator bob minendez. it's going to be a very good night for republicans and we believe we have the clear closing argument. if michael says it's all about jobs, well support the gop nominees because under trump we've had historic gains in employment around this country. >> harris: michael i want to ask you about the same thing. can we pop that back up? because when you look at arizona, that was a place and i interviewed her a couple of months ago, sinema,

north dakota does not have voter registration. we're the only state in the country that doesn't have voter registration. and that's due to the fact we're very small. the population of north dakota is less than the city of charlotte, north carolina. and out of that idea comes you should open the polls and vote. under the statute it's written that the legislator that's written if you show up at the polls with a voter i.d., that has a picture i.d., date of birth and current residential address, you're supposed to be able to vote. but what we've seen and our investigation over the last month revealed and what we alleged in our complaint is some of those addresses are now being compared against the central voter file. and we had one of our plaintiffs who submitted an absentee ballot and it came back his address was invalid. again, we don't have voter registration. if you have an i.d. that has date of birth, picture, and residential address you should be able to vote. so what we're concerned about is next tuesday are they going to be ch

a big pickup for republicans in the state of north dakota. cnn can project that kreevin cramer will move over and be the u.s. senator, defeating incumbent heidi heitkamp, who people on both sides of the aisle have seen as the most endangered democrat. now cnn is projecting that she has lost and it is going to go into republican hands. what does this mean again for the balance of power in the senate? 38 democrats. 49 republicans because we now have two pickups, adding north dakota to that list. 13 seats remain to be called in the u.s. senate. democrats were hoping that they would have a miracle in states like north dakota, but it hasn't happened. only one of these competitive states has gone the democrats' way, and that's west virginia, wolf and jake. >> it's very interesting, jake. the republicans already have guaranteed 49 seats. they need only one more to get to 50. that's the magic number for them because the vice president would break any tie. they're very close, but they presumably could increase their majority. right now it's 51-49. >>
