chisholm, fashions for shirley chisholm, all kinds of interesting events for shirley chisholm and ople would show up and then we'd register them to vote and we'd raise money. - a black mar vice president, a for head of hew, an indian for the head of department of interior, and all your heads of departments, your heads of agencies, your ambassadorships, your councilships, all of these diffent positions would be reflective of the different kinds of peoples that are found in america. - she was a very strong feminist. she wanted to promote women. she wanted to mentor women. and she hiack and white women. it was a diverse office staff. - so the white femin they found her candidacy exciting and they said that they would support. - and this campaign, the shirley chisholm campaign, is the note of the new politics. the st of it is just making tired old noises, tired old noises. i can't get excited abt any of it. i am excited about shirley chisholm's candidacy. - personally i have considered senator mcgorn the best white male candidate. and i have worked for him in states where shirley chisholm

maloney: now, when we talk about shirley chisholm, i had the great honor of knowing him. when i worked with manfred orstein, he went against carter and we won so we went to the 1980 democratic convention and she was the co-chair with manfred orangestein. i was a staff member for that. i had the opportunity to be inspired by her. she was the first black woman to run for president. actually, she was the first woman who was elected to run for president. and just last week, along with yvette clarke and hakeem jeffries -- and you should know that hakeem jeffries from new york is running for one of the top positions in the democratic party which is caucus chairman. so you know any members of congress, ask them to vote for him. i'm supporting him. we hope he wins. but we introduced a bill to give to shirley chisholm the highest award that this congress can give to anyone and that is the congressional gold medal. and she was an inspiration to me and there's also an effort to name a battle ship after her. i think it's appropriate. don't you think? let's have a battle ship named af

[applause] rep. pelosi: that's an appropriate way to recognize her success and courage. imagine the courage it took then. now it still takes courage. let's talk about a few things. we ran on an agenda of for the people. lowering health care costs by reducing the cost of prescription drugs. protecting the pre-existing condition benefit, etc. we ran on for the people to raise paychecks by building infrastructure of our country. and to do so in a way that involves the full participation of our communities. we ran on integrity of government. and that is h.r. 1, the bill to lower the role of money and -- money in politics, increase the voice of people in politics. part of h.r. 1 which we hope will be one of the earliest pieces of legislation to come from the committees to the floor is to pass terri sewell's voting rights act right at the front of congress. [cheers and applause] the sunday before the convention had secret service walking the streets of san francisco, and i turned a corner, and there was reverend jackson, so i said, "secret service, let's go visit reverend jackson," and i had not made a phone call or anything. i said, "jesse, let's combine our forces." he said, "fine th me. "you get your delegates to vote for me and i'm happy with that." of course i had 1,200, and he had 3. - if hart had jesse jackson as a full partner, they absolutely could have taken it to the floor. i don't think it would've been quite like 1968, but it would've been a lot different. - jesse wanted to be nominated, and rightly so, and he wanted abs delegates to b to vote for him, and he did that, but i lost that chance. he'd come from 3% in the polls with no money and no name recognition to coming comith this close to takinnomination from mondale in san francisco. had it not been for the surdelegates, he probably would have. all: four more y

and i'm really proud that our election day was 50 years and one day after shirley chris chisholm became the first black woman to serve in the united states congress. >> what are your priorities for when you get there? do you have a dream in terms of committees, legislation to work on? obviously, you are getting there as part of a new democratic majority. there's no democratic majority in the senate to work as a partner, but there will be democratic control of those committees and you're coming in as a bit of a star. >> oh, thank you. well, i am really focused on health care. it has emerged as the number one issue in the election across my community because premium prices are high, prescription dug prices are high, and so many families across northern illinois are feeling squeezed. as a nurse, i know how important it is to protect pre-existing conditions. i also have a pre-existing condition myself and so this health care agenda, lowering prices, making sure that we can expand coverage and include real mental health care reforms are the things i want to immediately begin tackling. >> ill
