tom hanson is here in new york with more. good morning. >> good morning. we're starting to get a better picture of what happened when this plane plunged into the java sea. a report was released overnight detailing the plane's technical issues. indonesian investigators say the pilots of the doomed lion air flight struggled to control the plane. because an automatic safety system malfunctioned. in our view, the plane was not airworthy said the head of the national transport safety committee. the boeing 737 had a similar problem on the flight the day before the crash. according to the plane's flight data recorder, a new antistall system known as mcas kept pushing the nose of the plane down. during the 11-minute flight, the pilots fought the downward tilt more than two dozen times until finally losing control and crashing into the java sea at four 50 miles per hour. all 189 on board were killed. they say the pilots did not hit two cutoff switches that would have deactivated the system as was done on the previous flight. >> why didn't they just turn it off? if
