it is smoke from the unhealthy air. it has blanketed the campus and much of the bay area because of the campfire in butte county. today is another spare the air day. almost a week of unhealthy air quality readings. several college campuses are closed through saturday because of the unhealthy air. people around the bay area have been wearing masks. several college campuses have canceled classes. san jose state and cal state and uc davis have canceled classes through the weekend. administrators site unhealthy air quality of the reasons behind the cancellations. earlier this week we talked about this. >> the smoke contains small particles -- particulate matter -- tiny particles which can get into the respiratory tract. >> if you want to keep from freezing these particles only the m 95 masks work. the health effects are not permanent in most cases. san francisco state will remain closed through the weekend but they will keep the dorms and dining halls open for the students to remain on campus. classes have been canceled at

wildfire smoke from the camp fire in butte county continues to blanket the bay area with unhealthy air today and the haze is expected to linger, air quality officials said. the hazardous smoke has created unhealthy conditions for much of the region. the district's air quality map at baaqmd.gov, updated every hour, showed much of the region in "unhealthy" residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities and to limit exposure to unhealthy air by closing windows and doors. those with heart or lung disease should stay inside and limit their physical activity. pets are affected by the unhealthy air. in san jose, several pets got their nightly play time at this dog park, but the chief veteran at the peninsula reminds pet owners that animals are just as susceptible to health issues from the bad air as people are. her biggest warning is not allowing pets to get too warm and not allowing them too much strenuous exercise like running or playing catch. that induced panting which makes the pets breathe in bad air. one san francisco dog owner decided to drive four hours south to escape the smoke. we spoke with her. she talked with us by facetime as her and her two dogs headed to the bay. >> the dogs just wanted to go outside and play so much, so it will be nice for them to do that after a week of being very boring inside. >> she said she's always wanted to visit mora bay and it was the closest she could find with actual healthy air quality. >>> there are people analyzing the air. there's a war room of sorts for measuring the air we're breathing. the bay area air quality management distri

the rest of the bay area seeing some unhealthy air quality. these numbers are a measure of how much particulate matter is in the air. all of the things that are floating in the air because of the wildfire smoke that's unhealthy to breathe in, and we are in this range where it's unhealthy levels from 151 to 200. very unhealthy are the purple numbers that are over 200. only thing that will help improve our air quality will be a shift in the wind, which will most likely be caused by some incoming rain. we're going to see that. we have storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar powered up and ready to go to track the rain that will be here, most of the bay area on wednesday. as we look at where it is now, we have a weak disturbance moving into southern california, that's going to push some clouds our way. no rain as of yet, but you will notice more clouds today, and then our round of rain gets here on wednesday. we can see that on the satellite imagery, as that system approaches, and once again partly to mostly cloudy skies as you get ready to head ou
