running for a seat in utah's house of representatives. she fell short that election, losing her bid for house district 32 by just three votes. this past tuday, the anesthesiologist joined the growing number of women elected into , offifeating her opponent by nearly 2,000 votes. suzanne harrison joins me now from utah. >> how did this wave that we're seeing, whether it's a blue wave, whether it's the women's wave, whther it's the veran's wave, how did that all converge in a race like yours in utah? >> you know, i was honored to be one of many, you know, record-breaking numbers of women running for office bo locally and nationally. and i do feel that my experience as a mom and as a medical doctor, and a parent of children in our local publihoc ls would be an asset as i serve in the leblg slate ture. but ultimate-- n'timately i think people voted for me because of my gender. i think they voted for me because i did the work going door to door and listening to

i had just moved to utah six years before. utah is a parochial state, in a lot of ways at that time. she knew i was going to win and she believed in me. she was very proud of me and so was my dad. he would not say it, but i knew he was. they lived in a humble home in utah. it was very humble. but everybody loved them. the reason they did is because they were salt of the earth, really good people. not very well educated, but worked their education at themselves and very, very good people. host: senator, when you think back on your time here, what do you think your legacy will be? sen. hatch: i think i have passed over 800 bills. most of them are very important bills. nobody has ever done that before. i am not bragging, i am just saying i worked my butt off every day i have been here. i think my legacy is that i was able to bridge the gap between democrats and republicans. to bring people like ted kennedy across. not just ted kennedy but everybody. i use ted kennedy because i know how liberal he was and what a partisan he was as

now, jim hoped to become governor of utah. in the 1980's, after jim had been serving in the house of representatives for a few years, there was an opening for a republican to take back the governorship, and everyone expected jim to make a play for it, except norm wanted to run. so what did jim do? well, he stepped aside, allowing his friend to run for and eventually win that position, the position that norm then held for eight years. that was the caliber of jim hansen's character. he was a man of humility and integrity, who honored his word and always put others before himself. i'd be remiss if i didn't also mention jim's piety in the truest, purest sense of that word. in addition to having a deep loyalty to his country and to his state, he had a deep loyalty to his family and his church. jim married ann bergoyne in 1958, which he considered wisely to be the smartest choice he ever made. their family grew to include five children and eventually 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. grandpa jim was the center of their fami
