but austin, i think austin personifies a dedication to public service. his whole adult life has been in public service. and i have to say eight great personal physical and moral cost to him because it was not easy being a public servant in many of those years. he left the nationalist party to which he'd been elected and became a founder member of the social democratic and labor party with patty devlin. and it should be said also when we look at the civil rights movement in northern ireland, to some extent once the sclp was established and once they'd gone into storm in parliament, much of the debate moved from the streets to parliament because our generation believed that we could yet reform through parliamentary means. and one of the results of all of that was the formation of the first power-sharing executive in january, 1974, when both nationalists and unionists sat together in government. the first and only time that that happened, that is before the agreement in 1998. so austin played a crucial role in that power-sharing executive before it collapse
