reporting live in richmond, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> yes, cheryl, thank you. we're hearing westbound could be indefinitely. thank you so much. as cal trans works to repair the areas where the concrete has broken away, engineers are trying to figure out exactly why it's happening. our investigative unit has been talking with them and found two primary theories. the most likely is what they call cyclic concrete fatigue which is essentially wear and tear from all the trucks that drive over the bridge. the bridge is 63 years old and some of the concrete may still be original even though cal trans has repaved and refurbished sections multiple times over the years. now, the other theory is that some of the steel supports for the upper deck are rusting. and when metal rusts, it expands. it can crack the concrete around it. >> well, take a look. earlier this afternoon hundreds of people, you see them there, just stuck with nowhere to go. this was for about an hour. could you imagine that when the bridge was first closed because of that falling concrete. let's bring in
