ernie grew up in dallas. first 18 years of his life, and people in chicago, and people in dallas don't really pay much attention. for the first time dallas took ialked to five of his classmates and they all told me how frustrated they were that dallas had forgotten ernie. and finally, a businessman raised the funds to erect the statue of ernie outside his old high school. but -- where he -- when he was first 18 years of his life were spent in totally segregated, very poor section of dallas. so -- he was always only around blacks. i don't think he had -- i'm convinced he didn't have a conversation with a white person, a real conversation. until he went into the army. and he had two years in the army. he returns from the army and goes to play for the kansas city mon monarchs, and the negro city leagues, he's in an all black situation. he's a younger kid, and the older black people who were not going to make it to the big leagues, this was 1950's, major lesion had only been integrated for 30 years. . . . . >> th
