. >> garvin thomas is here with the woman behind it. >> maybelle is a mother and someone who was formerly homeless. so she knows the sadness that combination can bring to a woman. so she wanted to do something nice to help others in just that situation. sitting on the edge of san francisco bay. not far from sfo, samaritan house's safe harbor homeless shelter has a beautiful location. of course the journey a resident takes to get there is often just the opposite. >> i was broken. no family, no friends. i don't know anybody. i felt so alone. >> reporter: maybelle came in june of 2014, escaping what she says was an abusive marriage. >> i had to decide that i had to, you know, save myself, save my sanity and just move. >> reporter: for maybelle who had lived comfortably in the u.s. since emigrating from the philippines, it was quite a come down. her first months at the shelter full of anger and depression. but ultimately, with the help of a community she discovered here acceptance. >> the idea of being in a homeless shelter with homeless people, i felt like, okay, i'm one of them now. i'm her

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas has his story. >> jack dewey has set his sights on a career in medicine soon entering a nursing program. that means he'll be helping patients in all sorts of traditional ways and we suspect one very creative one. >> the emergency room at stanford hospital can be a very busy place, but not always. once in a great while things do get quiet. emergency room technician jack dewey remembers one such night last year. >> it was a very slow night. all the work was done. i couldn't go help anywhere else. >> reporter: there was, however, one young patient there, and jack went looking for something he could use to cheer the child up. he found all of these things, compression bandages, normally used to wrap wounds. >> it's the only thing here that we have that comes in any different color. it was a lot more of a friendly material to work with. there's a lot of sharp, pointy things here. that was the most fun. >> though he had never done anything like it before, jack created this orange fish in just a few minutes. >> and it turned out pretty well. i showed everybody in
