biden. the other two numbers sides up with what we just saw in the cnn poll. not biden's. let's get some insight from the professor. ron brownstein. so, help me understand. is this about methodology or is this about a change in the actual mechanics of the election? >> i think it's probably some of both. monmouth is a good pollster, one poll, a relatively small sample, 300. and as you note, not only the cnn poll, but a fox poll and a pew poll roughly the same period of mid-august, had a similar result with biden somewhere around 30. warren usually in second and bernie sanders just behind her. i would say that the magnitude of this may be somewhat questionable. that they're all even at this point. but the direction is probably right, right? >> wait, but hold on a second. let's take it one step sideways. this is the one part i don't get. i hear you. it's a smaller sample, it's all about who they ask and maybe they've got a different concentration of who people want. except, the numbers for warren and sanders are kind of what we've been seeing in all the other polls. only bide

>> biden is comfortable. biden is someone the people know. i don't get a lot of these numbers myself. a lot of this is about age. older voters love them some joe biden. and all we want is trump out of office. the younger voters millennials and generation x like myself often want something more, often don't think that joe biden is going to be transformative enough. so the issue that he's going to have is sort of the reverse of bernie sanders in 2016. bernie sanders got young black voters, couldn't get anybody over the age of 30, right? basically joe biden's got to figure out a way to get younger african-americans to believe in him to understand that he's made changes since the 1994 crime bill, and then he actually has to have a comprehensive on the ground plan which very few people except for cory booker talked about of how you're going to fight voter suppression. because even if you've got black people supporting you, if their votes don't count or they can't get to the polls, that doesn't count. >> and i am so glad you raised that age issue.

joe biden up 7 since then. the only other major movement is this kamala harris drop of 12 points from 17% in the immediate after math of that debate when she landed a punch on biden now back down to 5%. this poll is sort of the bounce back. joe biden returning to his dominant place, kamala harris going back down into single digits. that first debate had impact, but it wasn't long lasting. i want to also show you something in this poll about the ideological break down that we are seeing across democratic primary voters. look at this, among self-declared liberals, the top three, biden, sanders, warren, they're in a dead heat, battling over liberals. when it comes to the moderate and conservative democrats and democratic leaning independents, joe biden wins that group going away. this is going to be critical for joe biden's continued success in this race. now, we ask, who do you think you want as a candidate, somebody that can beat donald trump or somebody that shares your positions. a majority of democrats still,

so the biden campaign, even dr. joe biden, his wife making the point yesterday at an event that this is about electability and some of that is in the numbers, is it not? the democratic voters not only prefer him, but see him as the most likely to beat trump? >> you are absolutely right. 54% in this poll, a clear majority of democrats, say they want a can't that has the best chance of beating trump, versus 39% who say they want a candidate that shares their position on the issues. this is critical to a majority of democrats and it is a biden strength. but take a look at how different demographic groups perceive this question. if you take the white non-college educated versus white college educated, non-college educated folks it actually is a little bit of advantage to somebody that shares their positions, but splits evenly. if you've got a college education, 65% want getting rid of donald trump as issue number one, 29% day shares a position on your issues. the divide gets even starker when you look at age. look at th
