abc's david kerley leading us off. >> reporter: seconds after the crash -- >> there's a baby in there. >> reporter: -- those on board are fleeing the burning jet. >> yeah, a dude just pulled a baby out of there. it's a private jet. >> reporter: it was a baby, the baby of nascar legend dale earnhardt, jr., and his wife, amy. the family was on board with two pilots. the cessna citation was landing in elizabethon, tennessee, when something went wrong. the jet rolling off the end of the runway. video showing that behind the wreckage, something is burning on the runway. when firefighters arrive, much of the ten-seat aircraft is on fire. earnhardt's sister tweeted that "everyone is safe." the family, including baby isla, were taken to the hospital for evaluation. earnhardt jr. is a third generation nascar driver, one of the most popular ever, with 26 wins, now retired and working nascar tv broadcasts. the jet belongs to earnhardt, jr., registered to his north carolina-based company. this flight starting in statesville, north carolina. seven minutes before the crash, earnhardt, jr., apparent

here's david kerley. >> reporter: that hidden camera in the first class lavatory of the united airlines jetliner was discovered by a female passenger, who noticed a blue blinking light. but it was detective work by united airlines and authorities that led to an arrest of the halliburton employee. united corporate security found video of a man setting up the camera, no face, but distinctive jewelry and clothing. then the fbi and police checked surveillance video of the boarding area in san diego where the flight started, and houston, where it landed. they matched the clothing, enhanced the picture, and identified the halliburton employee, a malaysian citizen, choon lee. not only that, the fbi recovered deleted files from the device and found video from an earlier emirates flight, which captured two women, including a flight attendant. this incident happened in early may. lee is due back in federal court on wednesday. david? >> thanks. >>> when we come back, the new produce recall. >>> and two sons with the surprise for their father. the superstar standing right behind him. chantix is pro

here's david kerley. >> reporter: with all that smoke, the nearly 200 hawaiian airlines passengers tonight are calling their flight frightening. >> it was a very terrifying moment. and i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: just 20 minutes before landing in hawaii, an acrid smoke. >> the cabin just started filling up with smoke. so we all just kind of had to go like this to breathe. >> reporter: the pilots got a warning of smoke in the cargo hold, not knowing whether or where there might be fire. they decided not to deploy the oxygen masks, which could feed a fire, but they do declare an emergency. >> hawaiian 47, visuals four right emergency aircraft. we will be evacuating on the runway. >> emergency personnel are standing by. >> everyone on board was nervous. babies and children were crying and screaming. >> reporter: on the ground. the slides deployed for a quick evacuation of passengers. seven people, including two children, rushed to the hospital for smoke inhalation. hawaiian airlines says an engine seal failed, and hot oil burned and bled into the air system. >> quite a scene th

abc's david kerley covers aviation. >> reporter: this 37-year-old delta pilot, gabriel schroeder, is grounded tonight, suspected of being drunk as he prepared to fly passengers. the pilot saw that minneapolis police were conducting additional random checks at the checkpoint. according to police, schroeder looked confused, told a tsa officer he wasn't ready to be screened and left the area. authorities say he's seen on surveillance video going into a men's room, where police later find an unopened bottle of vodka. the visibly nervous pilot does go through screening, but police are suspicious. and officers find schroeder in the cockpit for the flight to san diego. as passengers waited, schroeder's breathalyzer was well over the limit for pilots. he was arrested. >> for a pilot, he looked a little disheveled. like, his -- he had the white, with the snap, but it was in dire need of an ironing. you know, it was kind of a schleppy look. because the other pilot, you know, looked like he walked out of "gq." >> reporter: delta found another pilot. the flight was delayed for an hour. the airli

our senior transportation correspondent david kerley has the story. david, wow, this was really a terrifying final 20 minutes of this flight for these guys. >> reporter: very scary, cecilia. the first warning for the pilots was ominous and passengers knew immediately something was wrong when the cabin filled with acrid smoke. just 20 minutes before landing in hawaii, this jet suddenly fills with smoke. >> it was a very, very terrifying moment and i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: nearly 200 passengers on board the flight from oakland. >> they came by with some wet cloths for everyone to breathe through with the smoke because it was really getting thick. >> reporter: the initial warning, smoke in the cargo hold, the pilots declare an emergency. >> hawaiian 47, visual four right emergency aircraft. we will be evacuating on the runway. >> emergency personnel are standing by. >> everybody on board was very very nervous. babies and children were crying and screaming. >> reporter: as soon as the jet stops, the pilots deploy the slides to quickly ev

kerley has the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. that flight attendant out of a job this morning, facing charges as well as passengers telling us that they were worried about their safety. concerned passengers this morning telling us they were frightened for their safety after spotting this flight attendant apparently intoxicated. >> what i saw on the flight that day was a very concerning and confusing scene. >> she was stumbling and kind of staggering back and forth, bumping into passengers. >> reporter: on this short united express flight from chicago, passengers say that sole flight attendant appeared impaired, even before takeoff. >> it was clear that she was inebriated in some capacity, had no coordination, no balance. she was incomprehensible over the microphone. >> reporter: and once in the air it appeared that julianne march passed out. the passengers even fastening her seat belt for her. >> one of the other passengers did get up at a certain point and help her sit dun

the pilot is in court today and david kerley has the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. we reported on a couple of these incidents in the past week and you might be surprised. it happens more than you might think. the 9:00 a.m. united flight from glasgow to newark never took off. this morning the 61-year-old captain is scheduled to be in court to answer charges he had too much alcohol in his system. even before making it to the cockpit scottish police say someone noticed a smell of alcohol. breathalyzer tests led to the arrest of both pilots. the first officer was later released but the flight was canceled. >> i can think of no rational reason why any airline pilot should ever show up for duty with any appreciable ability of alcohol in the bloodstream. >> reporter: united says it has a, quote, strict no tolerance policy for alcohol. strangely nearly three years ago to the day two other united pilots were arrested in glasgow ready to fly that same flight. both over the limit for alcohol, both serving two months in a
