matt turner. they thought he was crazy. he was a complete fanatic the man who wrote down matt turner's confessions. they are readily available online and i encourage you to read it. one of the things my book does is it takes the confessions much more seriously than anybody has the last 50 years. i make arguments about the reliability of the confessions. my argument is that they actually are what they say they are which is basically what he said. it makes some really remarkable. you can read them in about an hour. if you ever want to find out you can just read it online. so thomas gray thought he was a complete fanatic. newspaper reports said he was the same thing. a preacher and a pretend profit. of course this is a model of understanding that has lasted. it has been an important part of our way of understanding slave revolts. if you look at the confession which came back in 1967. he is still a little bit crazy. i think this is a way to understand the result because i don't think that's true. >> i don't know if thomas gray

matt turner's rebellion in virginia. the bat well new mexico and you start the the start people saying such a war of conquest, it must be seen as a war against freedom, humility, against the union. in the southern perspective people are saying hey, let's let the states decide on what the future of slave holding will be in these particular territories this stuff bubbled up if or good 30 years until the compromise of 1850 where you're going to have the senate gain control. the fugitive slave law all of a sudden made northerners compliment -- complicit in slavery. you have uncle tom's cabin, the best-selling author of the time. when abraham lincoln met the author she said so you're the little lady to -- who started this great war? people coming from new england carrying what was called beacher's bibles. they were actually guns and a little civil war breaks out in what was known as leading, kansas. almost every day in congress you have some sort of a pundit way -- say we're more divided than we've ever been. are you sure? i

it was the ideals of our declaration don't forget that inspired matt turner to his 1821 slave revolt of july 4th. white abolitionists too returned to the declaration time and time again finding in its famous lines a to their own conscious. if it meant no right to control another man, in a system of slavery in which men were born the subjects and indeed the property of others is profoundly wrong. no one did more to constitute our declaration as a beacon towards which the people of the united states must hue than abraham lincoln, the great emancipator, the declaration was, lincoln said, our manifest destiny constantly looked to, constantly labored for. the assertion that all men are created equal was of no practical use in effecting our separation from great britain lincoln wrote in an 1857 essay denouncing the recent dread scott decision. it was placed not for that, but for future use. its author meant it to be a stumbling block to all those who in after times might seek to turn free people back into the hateful path of decpetism. when war came back, he stuck to that. he came to the s
