he looked like he had that fire again today in iowa. but i think some worry it could also maybe injure him. as one pollster at monmouth university told "politico," he doesn't want to talk about this, his family. your thoughts on how biden should handle this new fight with trump. >> i mean, for starters, it's just an awful day, an awful news cycle for the president. and that's -- that -- let's start there. >> yeah. >> just sort of american -- the voters like to pick their president was campaign rallies like the one you saw. and steak fries and the rest. what we've seen is pretty remarkable. i think the president's seen the vice president and a half dozen other candidates beating him in poll after poll, state after state, and it's clearly leaving the president reeling. that's what -- >> i understand. we've talked about the president. i want to talk about biden. >> sure. >> you know biden. how should he, you know, he was angry there. i mean, i was watching that and flinched a couple of times at how aggressively he was pointing his fingers

it's also important for people to understand that in the 43 years of the iowa caucus, since the iowa caucus was created, our nominee has always won either iowa and/or new hampshire. with only one exception, 1992 and bill clinton. so winning iowa or new hampshire has been defining to be the nominee. and in iowa, they value, they treasure, they expect personal one-on-one attention. they expect you to be in their living room having their jello roll. the polk county steak fry coming up with about 10,500 steaks that are being grilled. of course there will be vegan options too. >> there will have to be for senator booker. you bring up that personal retail hand-to-hand, face-to-face type of politics, but according to "the des moines register" and we've got pictures from supporters outside of the polk county steak fry. the top five national candidates at least, only bernie sanders cracks the top ten in the number of visits to the state or events held around the state. you've got at the very top there john delaney who at the latest iowa poll is 1%. amy klobuchar behind that pretty low. really

kamala harris is really betting it all on iowa. and she's basically maintained her level of support. but she came out of the gate really strong. but she seems to have lost that momentum. >> yeah. i think, and while elizabeth warren's support has been, some of her support has come from bernie sanders' voters, i think a lot of her support has come from kamala harris' supporters, pete buttigieg supporters. those numbers are all down. so she's drawing which is great news for warren but bad news for kamala harris. i think those candidates are stuck. you know, they are betting it all on iowa, and they are just not seeing the movement. and, again, but again the caveat, i will say it again, is things have a way of moving in democratic caucuses in iowa very quickly. and that could happen. and picking up on karen's point, i think elizabeth warren is moving to a different phase of the campaign where she will be seen by some in the media as the frontrunner. that brings with it the kind of scrutiny that you don't see as an insurgent candidate.

so if biden loses iowa, that image takes a hit. and whoever beats him meanwhile, would start to look a lot more like a winner. in other words, the iowa result could lead to a big shake-up in new hampshire. and already, right now, new hampshire looks close. this is the most recent poll. biden ahead, but only by a few points. he is in the low 20s. in new hampshire right now. so what do these numbers end up looking like if biden takes a big hit in iowa and someone else is suddenly surging? and if biden lost iowa and new hampshire, he'd be 0 for 2 in the lead-off contest. and yes, theoretically, he could recover in next states. but you know how these things go. it only takes a couple of wins or a couple of losses to change everything. voters in nevada and south carolina and everywhere else take their cues from what happens in new hampshire and iowa. they flock to the winners. they avoid the losers. that's why in the modern era of presidential politics, no one in either party has lost contested races in both iowa and new hampshire and s

she's serious about iowa. she really wants to connect with iowa. and win iowa. we'll see what happens. so much has to do with debate performance. she has a good debate and the numbers surge and people think she has a bad debate and numbers go down. she especially seems to be kind of held responsible for her debate performance. more than any of the other candidates. i'm not sure why that is. >> one last thing. the circus on show time back on sunday 8:00 p.m. you spoke with a republican challenger. >> donald trump he has a comfort level with debt that you and i don't have. because we didn't have a daddy to bail us out in a pinch. it's not the experience of the american taxpayer. the chinese won't bail us out. we're walking away from a financial hurricane. >> what do you think? do you think the republican challengers will breakthrough? >> trump has a hugely popular. republican party has favorable ratings within a party. there's two ways to run. unopposed and scared. you have to take it serious. there's three different guys. one from illinois and northeast. and sout

it is not hard to imagine a scenario where joe biden is unable to win iowa, where he loses iowa. then you start thinking about it. there's eight days of course, a short turnaround between iowa and new hampshire. sanders and warren especially, if one of them, especially warren, were able to knock off biden in iowa, think how dramatically the races change based on the iowa result. barack obama in 2018, john kerry in 2004. if warren or sanders were to knock off biden in iowa, here is where you are. this is the poll from new hampshire. they have warren, biden, sanders within a point of each other right here. again, you think of it. if a warren or a sanders wins iowa, eight days later they're in a next-door neighbor state. elizabeth warren, boston media market right there. southern new hampshire. sanders won new hampshire against hillary clinton with 61%. the possibility exists if one of them knocks off biden in iowa, they roll it right into new hampshire eight days later, then one of them could be 2-0. biden could be 0-2. you have seen in the past how dramatically it changes polling

iowa? do you think this tells us what's beginning to take place in nevada, south carolina, and potentially new hampshire? >> well, we know what happens here on caucus night is very influential. we know -- less influential with what happens in new hampshire, but extremely influential with what happens down the line, particularly south carolina. in terms of the way that the campaigns are playing out, i think they learn from iowa. they figure out what works here and then begin implementing it elsewhere. so what our poll is reflecting is where the campaigns have been significant. so i think, michael steele, that that's what you're asking. but i'm going to say it plays out a little bit differently. it plays out in what the campaigns learn from what they're seeing in our poll and how they move that forward. >> so, ann, on the biden slippage, is it lack of excitement? is it his age? is it lack of policy specifics? how fluid are these numbers? did elizabeth warren just manage to win the summer? >>

how is his campaign processing the rise of warren in iowa? >> yeah, and as you know, we've seen iowa sort of end biden's presidential hopes in the past. so it is not beyond the realm of possibility. but we have seen not just biden but pete buttigieg go a little harder after warren now that we're seeing her rise in a thuchl poll number of polls. earlier this week joe biden said you have to ask elizabeth warren what will happen when she raises your taxes if we're in the middle of a recession. and what was interesting about that and one of the reasons that i think elizabeth warren will have lasting staying power is when she was asked about these attacks, she refused to sort of engage. she ignored the attacks. she said that is not what i'm talking about, i'm talking about lowering costs for americans when it comes to health care and sort of pivoted back to her message. so while she will face attacks as she continues to rise in the polls, i think that the way that she is engaging with this or really refusing to engage with it will help her sustain
