elijah cummings? >> no. history will remember him as a very kind man, also a political warrior who fought hard for the causes he believed in and the community he represented. chris, what i was saying just before the ceremony started is elijah cummings is giving the nation one last gift today, to reflect on the goodness in politics and the contrast to what we're seeing right now, the stunts of yesterday when a class of politicians can peddle in division and hate almost. then there's elijah cummings who reminds us of the goodness of politics. i want to lean in on something that viewers may not comprehend. el lie j cummings is not laying in state in the rotunda where you often think of presidents. he's lying in repose in what was the original house chamber. the room looks smaller because the nation was smaller. as we know, elijah cummings was the son of sharecroppers. he tells the story of an african-american that rose to become a member of the house that used to use the term slavery and vote on matters of slav

that was the core of elijah cummings. he believed his job to be here in the house a trust from providence. he made it his mission not only to honor that trust in his own work serving his constituents and the american people, but also to ensure that everyone who serves in public office is held to account for the abuse of that trust. the public trust for him was a sacred thing. like the biblical prophet, elijah, he saw wrongdoing and spent his life working to banish it from our land. in much the same way he saw poverty in baltimore and elsewhere and worked to alleviate it. he saw injustice and worked to make our country more just. he saw inequality and worked to break down barriers and reduce disparities. at a moment of anger and pain in baltimore, he walked with the people and brought them comfort and consolation. a calming influence in a sea of rage. elijah cummings viewed service in this house for what it is, an instrument by which ordinary citizens make our republic better by giving it their love, their labor, and their

congressman elijah cummings. this great man, this brother, spent 36 years in public service to his people, his home state, and to our country. he was the leader who loved this nation, all of its people, and fought until his very last breath for those who had been left out and left behind. he dedicated every single moment of his life to strengthening and preserving our union. he spent every waking moment thinking of those who were hurting and suffering. he focused all of his energy into this congress and the people we represent. i tell you, it was an honor to know and to love him. it was an honor to serve with him. it was a great honor to consider him my brother and my friend. sometimes people would confuse us. and say, hello, elijah. or hello, john lewis, to hip. -- him. and we would joke about it. we would laugh about it. and i would tell the people in maryland, and people around our , weon, and around the world have lost a warrior. and i don't think we'll be so lucky or so blessed to see the ikeness of this man

elijah cummings was true to his name. he was the leader for our country, for our state of maryland, and we have the members, including our favorite daughter. he was a leader for our state. he was a leader like our brother john lewis for principle, for civility. he was a quiet man who did not seek the limelight, but he was afraid to step out into the arena and fight hard for the causes in which he believed strongly. and as all of us know, those equality, justice, opportunity, civil rights, education, children. he liked to say that children are the message we send to a uture we will never see. his parents sent elijah into the future and how much better the future was. he was beloved by his constituents, both those in the city of baltimore and those in its suburbs. was ndeed, it elijah probably better loved in my district than i am. most of my colleagues will understand that, of course. he worked hard. even in his final days the speaker is going to speak, i'm sure she will say something about a telephone call she had with hi

that is the calling cry of elijah cummings. he was always somebody who really reached out to everyone, republicans, democrats, everybody in this building. i mean, he spoke to everybody, and he was so incredibly close to the people in his own community. the seventh district, the people that he represented in baltimore, as well as in my own community, my own city. he was the person who was on the streets in baltimore after the death of freddie gray, imploring people to not destroy the city but to rise above it all, and to improve their communities. he is the person who was in those schools and in those dilapidated houses in baltimore, making sure that they were healthy and that they were safe for the people who he represented. he was also here in the halls of congress as a very powerful figure, one who was overseeing this very administration and that powerful oversight committee. he is somebody who we have heard both from the left and the right talk about having a moral compass, a guiding light, some sort of spirituality, and he

congressman elijah cummings has died. according to his office, he passed away at 2:45 eastern time this morning. the cause of death is longstanding heart challenges. he underwent a medical procedure that was supposed to keep him out of work for a week or so. the congressman missed two roll call votes and never returned to the job. >> cummings served as the chairman of the house oversight committee and was playing a key role in the impeachment inquiry. cummings was born and he was born and raised in baltimore. that's the area he represented since 1996. he became committee chair in january after the democrats won back the house of representatives in the 2018 elections. he made headlines in the wake of freddie gray. here was his emotional message. >> i had my term. i want their term. simple as that. >> what can you do for them? what do you do for them? >> what i can do is fight for them. i've got to make sure that people will hear them. they feel it's as if nobody hears them. i think we're beginning

[applause] i think so. it was no surprise that when we had the selection, and we won the congress that elijah said, send me as many freshmen as you can, because i want to help them be oriented to reach their fullest potential and house of representatives. so wonderful that he did that. all members, weather new or not, benefited from the generosity of spirit. sometimes the candor of how we do our work, whether or not the candor was there. elijah loved baltimore and his district. had our chats about baltimore all the time. he loved his constituents. by example, he give people hope. by his courage, he fought for what is right. by his brilliance, knowledge and legal prowess, he made a difference in so many ways. he was fighting for gun violence prevention and expanding opportunities for everyone. recognizing, now this is the most recent recognizing, the cost of scription drugs that hurt the health and economic well-being of america's working families. he was willing to reach across the aisle and even across the

truly elijah cummings was not just a great congressman but a great man. he had a presence, make commanding presence when he entered the room and he could be strong when he had to be. he had to be strong quite often by the also was always kind and decent and caring and honorable. the rare combination of inner strength and decency and that kindness and elijah have it. in happier times maybe the public would have seen his kind side more often but elijah was never one to shrink from the moment that i talked to him frequently. we talk about the goings-on in the house or the senate or the political trivia of the day are sometimes we talk about maryland politics. he was an expert. elijah was revered by his constituents and indeed by the entire state of maryland weather conservative democratic or republican black or white you went to elijah cummings for a device. this loss is an enormous one for his constituents, his staff and above all his family. i pray for them this morning and i pray for our country when the elijah cummings of the world are no longer with us.
