had you have john bel edwards who beat out eddie rispone, a deeply red state. donald trump, he invested a lot in this race. he had two rallies in two weeks. he had three rallies in the last five weeks. my goodness, a whole bunch of tweets and retweets on this election. is that a reflection on his problems, or do you see it as more a local issues election? . >> well, i think it's a bit of both. it is worth pointing out that edwards is certainly to the right of his party overall, especially on issues like abortion and gun control. i think he did do a really good job with resonating with louisiana voters in terms of kitchen table issues like access to early childhood education, expansions of medicaid, workforce training and increase in the minimum wage. in a lot of ways he just did a better job than the republican in terms of appealing to louisiana governors. it raises the question how much impact donald trump really has in his ability to dictate outcomes from washington. he really put a lot of his political capital into this race just like he did in kentucky. doe

john bel edwards was a popular governor. he had over 50% approval rating and still won by a close margin. i think we can take away a couple of things. this was a fairly popular governor. it may not help republicans to have trump be on the campaign trail for them. >> yeah, it's interesting. he is a popular governor. he's not your typical democrat. he is very strong on second amendment, pro-life and leans right on a lot of issues that democrats would lean left on. so there is that aspect which helps his popularity in a deeply red state. when it comes to the president, this for a man who takes pride. he's always bragging about turning around races and that it's him that does it. it's a real smack to the ego. he has been booed at a couple of sports events lately and so on. >> right. we don't have any proof that he has an impact on these other races in a positive way. >> right. >> he thats his own appeal and developed his own what some say is cultive personality for those who love him and will love him no matter what he says. tha

louisiana reelecting democratic governor john bel edwards in a close race. despite three visits by president trump in support of republican challenger eddie rispone. in 2016 president trump won the state by a 20% margin. joining me now is progressive commentator and radio talk show host rashad richey and, rashad, how surprising is this outcome given that edwards was the incumbent? >> well, it's somewhat surprising because trump did win this state in the 2016 presidential election, but he stomped really, really hard for the republican challenger. it shows that trump's base and his popularity is begin to run out. his political capital is coming to a standstill. there's a number that i think we all need to remember and i'm sure the trump campaign has already analyzed it. out of those who supported trump, 15 to 19 percent of trump voters said in a poll 11 days before the election in louisiana, they said in a poll that they are going to cross party lines and support the democrat even though they were trump supporters back in 2016. that means that he has at least

. >> look at the john bel edwards race in louisiana. people think this is terrible for trump. it's just like in kentucky where almost every other major race goes republican. it was a huge series of wins for republicans. they upped their majority, right, tom bevan, in the state legislature, but you've got a pro-life, pro-gun democrat in louisiana who beats kind of an average, not stellar, not terrible candidate for the republican party. >> no, that's right. i wouldn't read too much into either one of these races. we try to do that. we tend to do that. but matt bevin was in trouble before, wasn't well liked and as you said, all the other republicans did well and democrats -- john bel edwards is a different kind of democrats. democrats at the national level are not going to nominate, i don't think there is a pro-life candidate running in the race let alone a pro gun candidate. that is unique to louisiana and is not going to be part of the 2020 mix at all. >> pete buttigieg is now up nine points in iowa. he's the mayor of south bend, indiana, which has had lots of issues. african-

bel edwards. numbers from the sec air of state this morning -- secretary of state show 42% of runoff voters were democrat versus 31% republican. 27% listed themselves as other. the republican challenger, self-made millionaire businessman eddie rispone, campaigned on largely getting louisiana back to its conservative roots. and though he did not pull out a win last night, he at least thanked his supporters for a shot at it. >> we have nothing to be ashamed of. we had over 700,000 people in louisiana really want with something better and something different. louisiana democratic governor john bel edwards has narrowly won reelection, beating out his republican challenger eddie rispone. he wasas backed by president trump, who held two rallies in louisiana this month to support him. but high turnout by african american voters in louisiana, particularly in new orleans, propelled john bel edwards to reelection. in arizona, cell phone video footage has surfaced showing a sheriff's deputy tackling and pinning a 15-year-old quadruple amputee to the ground. the boy was abandoned by his parents and lives in a group home in tucson. the pima county sheriff's deputy was responding to calllls from e facility about the teenager allelegedly knockingng ovea trashcan. the deputy has since been placed on administrative leave. in fresno, california, four people were killed and another six were wounded after at least one gunman opened fire during a backyard party on sunday. the shooter fled the scene. the police have not yet made any arrests. sunday's shooting comes amid a string of massss shootings in california, including at a high school in santa clarita an

john, susan, and basil. all right, guys. john bel edwards. is he a bell weather for 2020? >> not necessarily, no. you hit -- you hit the point of the trend that is concerning for the white house. the suburbs idea. that he is -- it's not just in louisiana. we saw it in kentucky, as well. we saw it on, you know, in election night a few weeks ago where he had trouble outside of cincinnati. he had trouble outside of philadelphia and so on. if the republicans lose in the suburbs, that's a problem for trump. the louisiana race is a little bit of -- perhaps. this is a very conservative democratic governor. out of step with the national party on most issues. i mean, it speaks perhaps the president's capital a little bit. but also the lack of good advice around him. there's very few experienced campaign hands along -- along with the president now. i mean, jared kushner and brad pascal are the most seasoned. i mean, for instance, bevin in kentucky, it's a pretty unpopular governor there. >> just advice, don't go there. don't bother. don't stick yourself into that. >> right. there's
