kamala harris had a great night. was not quite as charming as when he was the front runner but that is to be expected. joe biden did fine, he had that one gaffe at the end, but who cares? on the responses to the questions he was guilt and he had an excellent closing. i think he got stronger as the night went on. elizabeth warren and bernie had solid performances talking about the progressive mantra, issues and ideology. it was a good debate. in the aftermath of nine hours of hearings i am not sure how many people watched it. david: that goes right to my question. the fifth one now, i am not sure how many people are watching. we have heard a lot from these debatetes, will the next make a big difference in who we select among democrats or who we elect as president? >> i think it will make a difference for sure. -- for sure with the democrats. there still has to be the winnowing out process. , cory the december debate booker set at the end he has not qualify for the december debate and gave his website. if cory booker f

. >> and azi, kamala harris had a rough week, and her campaign is falling apart. what do you make of this? >> she, like many of the other candidates came into the race less well-known and had to kickly articulate who she is, we all remember one of the first debates, she challenged joe biden, it was an electrifying potentially turning moment and very shortly after that debate, she sort of walked back, an issue of bussing in schools and the role that government plays, and what she said on that debate stage wasn't something that she was, that she sort of took a stand on afterwards and some people who are very excited about that moment looked at her again and said hey, what's really going on here? there is also an issue about fundraising. and also an issue about managing the campaign, and those kind of questions sort of dug away at some of the opportunities, at some of the opportunities that she had had. she too is looking for a big win coming out of south carolina. so there are some challenges root now and also some opportunities to turn things around. >> a lot of mo

look at kamala harris' operation. senator out of california acknowledged they did not have the money or resources to continue on with the staff they had. just this week announced several dozen staffers were being laid off. closing multiple field offices in new hampshire and moving many of the new hampshire staff here to iowa. the concern for kamala harris is, yes, 93 days away. she's been in the race almost eight months. a point in time, a reality, late polling in new hampshire shows 3%. here in iowa latest poll we've referenced from the "new york times" and cnn college also has her at 3%. looking at a campaign like this, you see four candidates beginning to elevate themselves and distance themselves from the rest of the field, frankly you have conversations with folks here on the ground that want this field to continue to narrow so they can make up their mind between elizabeth warren and joe biden, pete buttigieg, and it makes it a difficult place for senator kamala harris to note had a very strong speech last night

if it was kamala harris. >> i don't see anything aggressive in that transcript. i saw him asking very -- you know, other people have been looking into the 2016 election constantly. the president of the united states asking -- [ speaking simultaneously ] >> the whole conversation was totally misrepresented by the media. i'm glad he released it. >> i think what's missing here is the white house kind of controlling that narrative that mike is articulating here. they are pushing back against process, they are saying read the transcript but they're not articulating why the president brought up what he did during that phone call. what is the substantive reason for discussing joe biden in that call. was there a national security issue. was there legitimate corruption issue. neil: i see everything mike is saying, believe me, but i would just be aware of the noise that you just encountered over the mueller probe and involving a sovereign nation potentially in a u.s. election. here, you are appearing, appearing maybe that wasn't your intention, to be doing the same. right?

kamala harris is obviously nowhere near the top. is focus on iowa going to get her anywhere? >> she's not committed to new hampshire. there have been photos circulating today about all of her offices that have been effectively closed. nobody's there. nobody's doing anything. so an all in strategy for iowa may sound good if you're a harris supporter but by the same token too, nobody is really supporting her in iowa yet. there are a lot of undecided voters still. the poll numbers you just put up are for the people who have made up their minds. but there's a dwindling number of people who haven't made up their minds at this point. if kamala harris is going to stay in this race and have any success, she's going to have to do something pretty monumental to get herself back in this race and be able to sustain it until we have the california primary which comes up on super tuesday in march. that's a long way away and a lot will happen before that before she has a chance to vie for the nomination in her home state primary. jon: perhaps surprising to some people is that joe biden is n

you wrote a fantastic cover story of kamala harris about a month or so ago. i'm sure based on your reporting, a lot of this is not a surprise to you. >> no, what's a surprise is that she failed to turn it around despite months and months and months of hearing this kind of frustration. you hear -- it's reporters, it's people inside the campaign, it's people outside the campaign, it's pretty much every voter that you meet on the campaign trail who goes to see her. the common theme is people want to like her, and then she doesn't close the deal. she's not able to articulate a consistent and compelling message that makes those votes who would show up for her, who are interested in what she's selling, makes them decide, yes, this is the candidate i can commit to. the times story and the post story laid out this frustration especially within her team that she has not been able to make those decisions. >> she's been all over the place in terms of message. here's a clip to show some of her all over the place messaging. >> truth. justi justice. decency. equality. free
